Soccer teams kick off season with wins
The Peters Township boys soccer team defeated Bethel Park, 3-1, to open the 2025 season.
Though Yourseff Benrabia vaulted the Black Hawks into the lead with 28 minutes left in the first half, Anthony Maiello provided the equalizer for the Indians before the half. Maiello finished with two tallies while Nathan Matuszewski provided the other tally for the Indians.
In follow-up action, the Indians edged Norwin, 2-1. Maiello netted his second game-winning goal of the season. Colin Froelich notched the equalizer after the Indians fell behind, 1-0, in the first half.
BP rebounded from its loss to the Indians and blanked South Fayette, 3-0. Benrabie, Xavier Jackson and Aaden McClelland scored the goals for the Black Hawks.
Meanwhile the Lady Indians met South Fayette in their season opener and a draw resulted between these defending WPIAL champions. Peters Township captured the Class 4A title while the Lions won their second straight Class 3A crown last year.
In the 1-1 contest, Brynn Busch scored for the Indians while Gabby Beinecke had the goal for the Lions.
In follow-up action, the Lady Indians blanked Penn Trafford, 2-0.
Marina Hajnosz, and Riley Busch netted the goals while Molly Kubistek registered the shutout in the nets.

Upper St. Clair opened up the 2025 girls soccer season with a pair of victories during the South Hills Classic.
In the opener, the Lady Panthers edged Thomas Jefferson, 3-2.
Mary Mascaro, Audrey Bodamer and Anelise Castrodale recorded the goals. Mascaro, Abby Burke and Avery Bayer collected assists.
In a 6-0 win against Beaver, Sierra Dupre scored twice while Burke, Angie Stein, Molly Biedrzycki and Natalia Disora tacked on tallies.
Abby Mascaro (2), Callie Roberts, Castrodale and Nadia Couoh racked up assists.
The Lady Panthers, who are captained by Dupre, Disora, Mary Mascaro and Gianna Carmelo, also battled North Allegheny to a 0-0 tie to improve to 2-0-1 on the season.
USC opens Section 2 action in Class 4A of the WPIAL hosting Baldwin at 8 p.m. Sept. 3. After a visit to Canon-McMillan on Sept. 8, the Panthers will challenge defending WPIAL champion and arch rival Peters Township on Sept. 10. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. at USC stadium.
