Three scouts from Boy Scout Troop 1313 in McMurray, sponsored by St. Benedict the Abbot Catholic Church, have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. All three are members of The Order of the Arrow, scouting’s service fraternity. They include:

Chad James Spencer, son of Carol and Ellsworth Spencer of McMurray, achieved his Eagle Scout rank in late 2016. He has been a scout for seven years, earning 28 merit badges. Eleven of his badges were required for the Eagle Scout rank. His favorite merit badge completion was the Citizenship in the Community badge. Chad’s leadership positions included that of scribe for one year, troop guide for one year, assistant patrol leader for one year and six months, and senior patrol leader for six months. Chad said his induction to the Order of the Arrow “was an amazing and gratifying experience.”

Chad’s high adventure trips included Sea Base in the Bahamas and Philmont in Arizonia. His Eagle Scout project involved removing an old, broken 60-foot fence at the entrance to Timber Lake and replacing it with a new one, along with building a new twin fence across the street. Chad graduated from Peters Township High School in 2017. He was involved in the high school choir, an a cappella group, and theater.

He was also president of the tech crew. Chad is currently studying electrical engineering, with a focus on audio devices, at Penn State. “Being a scout has helped me develop who I am in every way, from looking out for others on a day to day basis to being able to calmly respond to a crisis situation,” said Chad. “Scouting has made me a more effective leader and a better person.”

Kasmier Moncheck earned his Eagle Scout rank on Jan. 11 of this year. Fourteen-year-old Kas began scouting as a Tiger Cub in Pack 1313, which is also sponsored by St. Benedict’s. As a Cub Scout, Kas earned the Arrow of Light Award, the highest attainable award in Cub Scouts. Since his crossover to Boy Scout Troop 1313, Kas has advanced through the ranks at an impressive pace. Attendance at National Youth Leadership Training prepared Kas for his roles as assistant patrol leader, chaplain aide, troop guide, assistant senior patrol leader and senior patrol leader.

He is a Brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow, scouting’s National Honor Society. Kas also earned the Light of Christ, Parvuli Dei and Ad Altare Dei Catholic awards. To date, he has earned 66 merit badges. Kas was adopted from the Republic of Belarus in August 2003, and he wanted to give back to “kids who started out” just like him. For his Eagle Project, he organized a collection and delivery of toys, books, formula and non-perishable food items for the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh.

Additionally, he oversaw the construction and delivery of two bookshelves. Kas has remained active in Troop 1313 and recently attended the National Scout Jamboree in July of this year.

Marcus Jun Wei Ng Putz, son of Susi Ng and Rainer Putz of McMurray, achieved his Eagle Scout rank in May 2017. He began as a Tiger Cub in Taipei, Taiwan. Upon moving to the United States, he crossed over to Boy Scouts. Marcus held quartermaster and webmaster positions in Troop 1313. He earned 31 merit badges.

Robotics and archery were his favorite merit badge subjects. At Philmont, the high adventure camp in Arizona, Marcus climbed a mountain and learned how to shoot a black powder rifle. Philmont, along with a Cub Scout trip to Okinawa Island in Japan, were his most memorable camping trips. For his Eagle Project, Marcus refinished and renovated bridges along the Wheeling Heritage Trail. He led three teams in staining three separate bridges on the first workday. On the second day, he led two teams in additional staining and quality control endeavors.

Marcus is a 2017 graduate of Peters Township High School, where he participated in German Club and the Westinghouse Honors Science Institute Program. He is now pursuing an engineering degree at Penn State. Marcus credits scouting for helping him “adjust to life in the United States” and his moral development.
