Peters Township Parks & Recreation and McMurray Rotary will hold a Fishing Derby from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 18, at Peters Lake Park, for children in grades K-5. Prizes will be awarded for: first fish, biggest fish, smallest fish and most fish. There will be giveaways throughout the day. Register at the recreation center located at 700 Meredith Drive in Venetia.
A document shredding event with state Sen. Guy Reschenthaler and District Judge Ron Arnoni will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Aug. 18, in the parking lot of Independence Middle School, 2807 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park. JVS Environmental will offer an electronic items disposal service to residents and businesses of Mt. Lebanon only. Most electronic devices will be recycled free of charge between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 18, at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive (off Cedar Boulevard).
Applications are now being accepted for Peters Township Police Department’s Citizen’s Police Academy — Fall 2018, which runs from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Tuesdays, Sept. 25-Nov. 13. Learn the basics of criminal law with emphasis on the crimes code and vehicle code. The Bethel Park School District will be closing Black Hawk Drive in front of the high school to all thru-traffic on days when school is in session, from 7 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. This change has been made in conjunction with the Bethel Park Police Department in an effort to increase security at the high school during the school day. Signs have been posted at each end of Black Hawk Drive, explaining that the road is closed in front of the high school during the school day and that Bethel Park police will cite violators. Drivers will still be able to access the Spencer YMCA parking lot by entering Black Hawk Drive off of Church Road.
