Nathan Ward, a rising fourth-grade student at Washington Elementary School in the Bethel Park School District, grew a nine-pound cabbage this summer, thanks to the Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program. Nathan was a student in Melissa Sterbal’s room last school year, and her students participate in the cabbage growing program to inspire a love of vegetable gardening, healthy eating and environmental consciousness. Nathan’s cabbage has now been entered into Bonnie Plants’ contest, which will award a $1,000 scholarship to one student in each state whose cabbage is judged the best on size and appearance.
