Historical society

Peters Creek Historical Society welcomes Vincent T. Ciaramella as its guest speaker at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, in the social room of Wrights United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Venetia. Ciaramella will discuss wealthy socialite, athlete and industrialist Eben Byers, who was one of the greatest amateur golfers in the world, having won the 1906 amateur championship, when his jaw fell off. FUNDRAISERS

Beer Garden Bash

Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s ninth annual Beer Garden Bash fundraiser will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25, featuring more than two dozen craft beers. The library-courtyard event, sponsored by the Friends of the Mt. Lebanon Library, will feature ales, lagers, ciders and soft drinks, along with gourmet bratwurst, hot dogs and veggie dogs, plus other treats and steel drum music. Tickets are on sale at http://www.mtlebanonlibrary.org/beergarden and at the front desk for the all-inclusive price of $35 – or $50 for those wishing to make a larger tax-deductible gift to the library. All proceeds will be donated to support books and programs at the library. The number of tickets is limited, and tickets will not be sold at the door. The event is open to adults 21 and over. Charity event

Courts of Support will hold a charity event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 26, at Glen Creek Tennis Club, 1919 Stolz Road, South Park, to benefit Hekima Place. Events offered include Triples Tennis, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Pickleball. Food will be available for Moe’s Southwest Grill, Dante and Romulus (two new pizzerias opening soon in the Strip District). There will be live music from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., prizes, a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Hekima Place is a not-for-profit, charitable organization started by South Hills native Kate Fletcher, who founded a home for orphaned or vulnerable girls in Kenya. A generous donor has offered to match the first $10,000 raised for the event.

Hoagies

Bethel Park High School Band, Bethettes, Orchestra and Top 21 will be selling 12-inch hoagies once again as its main fundraiser. The three types of hoagies, which will be sold at different intervals throughout the school year, include regular (ham, salami, bologna, cheese, lettuce and tomato), special (same as regular but lettuce and tomato are packaged separately; suitable for freezing), and turkey (turkey breast meat and cheese, with lettuce and tomato packaged separately). Donations needed

Friends of Family Hospice & Palliative Care is seeking donations for its fifth annual Family Treasures Sale to be held in October. The desired good quality, gently-used or new donations include: jewelry, collectibles, purses and wallets, china and glassware, picture frames, mirrors, lamps, books, CDs and DVDs (no VHS), holiday decor, artwork, kitchen items, craft items, linens, and furniture (no large bookcases or large entertainment centers). FosterCat bingo event

FosterCat, Inc. will hold a bingo fundraiser on Sept. 23 at the Royal Place Restaurant, 2660 Library Road, Castle Shannon. Doors open at noon. There will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction. Food items available for purchase include baked goods and items listed on a special event menu. Scholarship fundraiser

The Southwestern Pennsylvania Registered Nurses Club will hold its 19th annual scholarship fundraiser card party from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29, at South Hills Country Club. Proceeds benefit the nursing scholarship fund. The club has awarded over $290,177 since 1962. Play cards and silent bingo or just socialize. Admission fee of $40 includes a hot lunch and door prizes. Night at the Races

The Pittsburgh Predators Mite Red Hockey Team will host its first Night at the Races at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25, at the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department, located at 456 First Street. Proceeds from the event will help offset the cost of in and out of town tournament fees, travel expenses, team jerseys and ice time. Theater events

Pittsburgh Public Theater kicks off the 2018-2019 season with a Summer Happy Hour on Aug. 23, at the O’Reilly Theater, downtown. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby. At 7:30, there will be a conversation in the theater. Meet PPT’s new artistic director, learn more about the upcoming season, and enjoy beverages and munchies. Tickets are $10.

• The Second City will perform “Made in America: Some Assembly Required” Aug. 24 and 25, at the O’Reilly Theater. Performances are at 8 p.m. Friday and at 5:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday. Call for talent

The Harmony Singers of Pittsburgh, a South Hills choral group, will launch its 2018-2019 season at 7 p.m. Sept. 4, with an open house and welcoming reception that includes an ice cream social for returning and prospective members. The event will take place at the Brightwood Christian Church Social Hall, 5044 West Library Road, Bethel Park. Weekly rehearsals are held at the church during the concert year. Prostate Cancer 

St. Clair Hospital will offer a new prostate cancer support group from 6:30 to 8 p.m. this evening, Aug. 23. Meeting will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month in the Dunlap Conference Center, Room C, Fourth Floor of the hospital, unless otherwise noted. The group is open to individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer throughout their treatment process. Patients can network with individuals with similar experiences and discuss specific concerns.
