Lensshooters meet

John Bauerlein, retired professor at Washington & Jefferson College, will be guest speaker at the Lensshooters Camera Club meeting set for 7 p.m. Jan. 10, at the Peters Township Public Library. Bauerlein’s visual presentation will focus on his trip to the Antarctica. Club members are reminded to bring two of their works for the annual Lensshooters Camera Club Exhibition and Competition. Army Women meet

Bethel Women’s Club

The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Western PA’s 2nd Annual Purple Party will be held on Jan. 20 at Cefalo’s in Carnegie. Admission of $60 per person includes valet parking, heavy hors d’ oeuvres, desserts, a Purple Party Cocktail, dancing to live music by the “Under the Covers” band, a chance to win one of 60 prizes and more. Dinner for a Dollar

Community of Christ Church, 3472 South Park Road, Bethel Park will hold Dinner for a Dollar from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 11. The menu will include spaghetti, bread and rolls, garden salad and desserts. Donations of $1 per person or $3 per family are accepted, but not required. No reservations are needed. No takeout will be available. Auditions

Special schools meeting

The South Central Areas Special Schools Committee will hold its 2017-18 meetings on the third Wednesday of each month with the exceptions of July and December. Live opera

Pittsburgh Opera brings a gripping, contemporary American opera to the CAPA School Theater in Jeremy Howard Beck’s “The Long Walk,” Jan. 20, 23, 26 and 28. Based on the book “The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life that Follows” by Brian Castner, the opera is a deeply personal exploration of a soldier’s return from Iraq where he served as an officer in an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit and his battle with what he calls “the Crazy” as he tries to reintegrate into his family life. ‘The long walk’ is the term for when a bomb disposal expert puts on their bomb suit and walks, alone, towards an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which they must disarm. ‘The long walk’ also refers to the struggle to re-integrate back into one’s own life upon returning to the United States, a struggle that Castner shares with brutal honesty. Chinese buffet dinner

South Hills Community Baptist Church, Upper St. Clair, will host a Chinese buffet dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Jan. 20. First come, first served. The menu includes egg rolls, chicken fried rice, cheese dumplings, egg drop soup, potato wedges, steamed rice and dessert. Additionally, an American-style bake sale will also be held. A donation of $10 per person is suggested. All proceeds will benefit the church.

Auditions

Carnegie Performing Arts Center will hold auditions for the ballet “Mary Poppins” on Jan. 27 at the studios located at 150 East Main Street in Carnegie.
