Live theater
After a successful first run in July 2017, “Sex Werque” returns to Carnegie Stage for four performances only. In this autobiographical movement theater piece about working as a former stripper in Pittsburgh, performer/choreographer Moriah Ella Mason explores attitudes and misconceptions about the industry, and how we perform eroticism and consume intimacy, both in the club and at home. Through theater and dance, she unpacks the world of sex work: the emotional and economic forces, the movement vocabulary, the masks, and the moments of authentic connection. A powerful work, at times funny, at times unsettling, providing an insider perspective. Conceived by and starring Mason, the show is produced by The Off The Wall Charitable Trust. Performances are at 7 p.m. Jan. 18-20 and 7 p.m. Jan. 21. Tickets are $10-$20. For mature audiences only; adult content and partial nudity. For tickets or more information, call 724-873-3576 or visit www.carnegiestage.com.
Live opera
Pittsburgh Opera brings a gripping, contemporary American opera to the CAPA School Theater in Jeremy Howard Beck’s “The Long Walk,” Jan. 20, 23, 26 and 28. Based on the book “The Long Walk: A Story of War and the Life that Follows” by Brian Castner, the opera is a deeply personal exploration of a soldier’s return from Iraq where he served as an officer in an Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit and his battle with what he calls “the Crazy” as he tries to reintegrate into his family life. ‘The long walk’ is the term for when a bomb disposal expert puts on their bomb suit and walks, alone, towards an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), which they must disarm. ‘The long walk’ also refers to the struggle to re-integrate back into one’s own life upon returning to the United States, a struggle that Castner shares with brutal honesty. Tickets start at $50 and can be purchased online at https://opera.culturaldistrict.org/production/51808/the-long-walk, by calling 412-456-6666 or at the Theatre Square Box Office.
