Ray Hunter Carson Jr.

Upper St. Clair School District recently tapped Ray Hunter Carson Jr. to serve as its director of human resources, effective Aug. 1.

Carson has more than 26 years of senior leadership experience in human resources for large corporations, including Highmark Health Inc. in Pittsburgh; Wyeth, a pharmaceutical company in Madison, N.J.; and M&M/Mars, a global consumer package goods company based in Hackettstown, N.J.

The human resources post is a newly established position within the district. Thes duties were previously shared among the two assistant superintendents and the superintendent. With the retirement of Patrick O’Toole, former superintendent of schools, and the promotion of John T. Rozzo, former assistant superintendent/current superintendent, an assistant superintendent position was eliminated and the new human resources position was created.

A graduate of Upper St. Clair High School, Carson holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from West Virginia University and a master’s in liberal arts/human resources from Rutgers University.

He is active in the Upper St. Clair and greater Pittsburgh communities. He serves on the board of directors for Make-a-Wish Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia, along with the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association. He previously served on the boards of the Urban League of Greater Western Pennsylvania, Project for Freedom and Every Child Incorporated.

Within the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association, Carson has volunteered his time as softball commissioner, community relations representative and coach for both softball and soccer.

He rlives in Upper St. Clair Township with his wife, Regina, and their middle school-age daughter, Rachel, and college-age son, Hunter.

Daniel J. Beck

The Pennsylvania Principals Association recently named Daniel J. Beck, Upper St. Clair High School assistant principal, to its newly established assistant principal at large board position.

In his new role, Beck will represent the perspective of assistant principals as related to the work of an educational leader in today’s schools, serve as a key practitioner’s voice on the board of directors relating to the role of assistant principal, and provide information and input related to the needs and concerns of assistant principals.

Beck joined the Upper St. Clair High School leadership staff in 2013. Previously, he taught secondary English in Greensburg Salem and Berlin Brothers Valley school district.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary English education from Duquesne University and master of education from the University of Pittsburgh. He is a doctoral and Superintendent’s Letter of Eligibility candidate at Duquesne University.

The assistant principal at large board position is one of two newly established positions on the association’s board of directors. Beck will serve a two-year term.

Martin J. Hagan of Meyer, Unkovic & Scott will be a featured presenter at the Pennsylvania Bar Institute’s (PBI) Elder Law Institute scheduled for July 20 in Harrisburg. He will co-present on the topic “Estate Planning for a Beneficiary with a Substance Abuse or Mental Health Disorder.”

Hagan is a partner in Meyer, Unkovic & Scott’s Private Clients Practice Group. He has been serving clients in the areas of estate planning and administration, estate and gift taxation, special needs trusts, elder law, and estate and trust litigation for more than 35 years. In addition, for the past 15 years, Hagan and his wife, Susan, have served as foster parents for newborn infants through the Children’s Home of Pittsburgh.
