Historical society

Peters Creek Historical Society’s annual picnic for members and guests will be at 6 p.m. July 23, on the grounds of the historic Enoch Wright House located on Venetia Road in Venetia. Hotdogs, hamburgers and beverages will be provided; bring a side dish or dessert. A special invitation is extended to the Giant Oaks gardeners, who maintain the variety of gardens on site. The house and gardens will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays, July 24, Aug. 7 and 21.

Women’s Business Network

Women’s Business Network – Washington Chapter will meet at 8:30 a.m. July 25, at Panera Bread, 108 Trinity Point Drive, Washington. The chapter meets the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. Each chapter is category exclusive so once a business category is filled by a qualified applicant, that chapter category is closed. A few of the open categories in this chapter include: Printer, Chiropractor, Kitchenware, Attorney, Nutrition, Senior Services, Hair Salon, Accountant and Massage Therapist. FLEA MARKETS/FAIRS

Flea market

The DeMarillac Guild at St. Louise de Marillac Church will hold its Timeless Treasures flea market from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. July 20 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 21, in the LeGras Parish Center (lower leverl), 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair. New this year is a presale from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission for the presale will be $5. There will also be a boutique offering better items.

HAPPENINGS

Country line dancing

Free concert

Peters Township Parks and Recreation presents The Mansfield 5 at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Peterswood Park Amphitheater. The free concert will feature dance music from the 1950’s through 1980’s. On July 25, The Lava Game performs party rock music at 7. There will be a food truck at both concerts.

Concert

The South Hills Chorale will hold auditions for all voice parts for the 2018/2019 season at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 and 27, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1066 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon. PHLF tours

Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation offers the following tours:

• Downtown’s Best Walking Tour, 9:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursdays, July 19 and 26. Cost of $20 per person includes a guidebook. Advance paid reservations are required.

• Free Friday Walking Tour: Oakland Civic Center/Forbes Avenue area, 10 to 11 a.m. July 20 and 27. Meet at the corner of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive Extention, near the dinosaur statue. Tour ends outside of Heinz Memorial Chapel.

• Free Friday Walking Tour: Oakland Civic Center/Fifth Avenue Area, noon to 1 p.m. July 20 and 27. Meet at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, 4141 5th Avenue (outside the main doors by the statue “Parade Rest”). Tour ends at Mellon Institute, 4400 5th Avenue. Reservations appreciated.

• Free tours at the Old Allegheny County Jail Museum, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, July 23 and 30. Last tour leaves at 12:30. Reservations are not required, but appreciated.

• South Side Walking Tour, 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 25. Advance paid reservations are required by July 20 as space on this tour is limited. Cost is $10 for PHLF members and $35 for non-members (includes a one-year complimentary membership in PHLF).

Picklesburgh

The Roberto Clemente Bridge in Downtown Pittsburgh will transform into Picklesburgh for three days this year, July 20-22. The event will include free DIY demos, live music, children’s activities, two craft breweries introducing pickle beers, the return of the 35-foot giant Heinz pickle balloon and a pickle juice drinking contest. Hours are from noon to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Electronic recycling

Mt. Lebanon will offer electronic equipment recycling to only residents and businesses of Mt. Lebanon. JVS Environmental will recycle most electronic devices free of charge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 21, at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive (off Cedar Boulevard).

Free concert

The Bethel Park Community Foundation’s 2018 Dean Streator Tower Concert Series will feature the Mon Valley Community Band, directed by Max Gonano, at 2:30 p.m. July 22, at the Bethel Park Community Center. Admission is free, but donations are accepted to benefit Bethel Park Community Foundation.

Summer camp

Camp Invention, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment camp program, is coming to Bethel Park School District’s Neil Armstrong Middle School July 23-27. Using hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) learning; builds resourcefulness and problem-solving skills; and encourages entrepreneurship — in a fun and engaging environment. Live theater

Little Lake Theatre Company announces “The Jungle Book” by Tracey Power, running through July 21. Mowgli, a young boy abandoned to the jungle, must learn to find his place within the community of animals. However, Shere Khan the tiger does not believe that Mowgli is part of the jungle only because he is a human. Mowgli must learn to abide by the ways of jungle law and stand up to the fierce Khan in this imaginative adaptation of the classic novel by Rudyard Kipling. Tickets are $10. Diabetes prevention

Register now for YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, presented by Spencer Family YMCA. Led by a trained lifestyle coach in a classroom setting, this program is delivered over a 12-month period, beginning with 16 weekly sessions followed by monthly maintenance. Learn about healthier eating, physical activity and other behavior changes over 25 months. Program goals include reducing body weight by 7 percent and increasing physical activity to 150 minutes per week. You must be at least 18 years old, have a BMI >25, and be at risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes. Participation includes a 3-month membership to the YMCA. Financial scholarships are available. Ballet

Ballet with Virginia Nicoll will conduct a two-day Classical Ballet Mini-Intensive for the young dancer ages 6-11 on Aug. 7 and 8.
