Stage 62, the theater company in residence at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library and Music Hall in Carnegie, presents the area premiere of “Dogfight” May 10-20, at 300 Beechwood Ave.

This critically acclaimed and hauntingly beautiful musical from by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and based on the 1991 Warner Brothers film by the same name, takes audiences on a heartbreaking yet ultimately uplifting theatrical journey.

The show takes place primarily in flashback to November 1963. On the eve of their deployment to a small but growing conflict in Southeast Asia, three young Marines set out for one final night of debauchery, partying and maybe a little trouble. A “dogfight” ensues: who can find the ugliest girl in town and bring her to a party where she will be judged? When Corporal Eddie Birdlace finds his winner in Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion.

The songwriting team of Pasek and Paul, the creators of “Dogfight,” composed the scores for the successful motion pictures “The Greatest Showman” and “La La Land” and contributed songs to the television show “Smash.”

Stage 62’s production includes an exquisite score featuring strong folk music influences and tight male harmonies in the uptempo group numbers as well as the slower ballads.

“Dogfight” contains language and themes intended for an adult audience. The suggested minimum age is 13.

Performances run May 10-13 and 17-20, with Thursday through Saturday shows beginning at 8 p.m. and Sunday matinees starting at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors.
