Historical society

Archeologist and Peters Creek Historical Society member Ben Demchak will be the guest speaker for the 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24 meeting of the historical society, which will be held in the social room of Wrights United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Venetia. Demchak’s program will focus on the study of cemeteries, their placement and how they relate to regulated areas like the Waters of the United States. His research calls attention to the reasons why cemeteries are the most threatened cultural resources under the Army Corps of Engineers interpretation of Section 106. The program is specific to genealogical cemeteries in Washington County, Ohio, that correlate to like patterns in undocumented cemeteries in Western Pennsylvania. Refreshments will be served. FosterCat bingo

FosterCat, Inc. will hold a bingo fundraiser on Sept. 23 at the Royal Place Restaurant, 2660 Library Road, Castle Shannon. Doors open at noon. There will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction. Food items available for purchase include baked goods and items listed on a special event menu. Cardigan Party

As part of the celebration for Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood 50th anniversary, WQED will host a Cardigan Party from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 20, in the Fred Rogers Studio at WQED, 4802 Fifth Avenue, Oakland. There will be Mister Rogers-themed music, entertainment and retro-themed snacks in the very studio where Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was produced from 1970 to 2001. Live theater

Little Lake Theatre Company presents William Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Macbeth” at 8 p.m. Sept. 20-22, 27-29 and Oct. 4-6. This tragic tale of ambition is the capstone of the company’s 70th Anniversary season, and will use the entire Little Lake campus to bring the story to life. Audience members will follow the cast through the opening scenes of the play outdoors, with settings designed to evoke the atmosphere of the Scottish countryside. One of the scenes will take the audience into the company’s historic rehearsal barn. The production features modernized Scottish costumes and several stage combat scenes (including broadsword duels). Cancellation

Due to an injury to one of the band members, The Collisions must cancel its Sept. 22 appearance at the B.P.O.E. Lodge 2213 in Bethel Park. The lodge and the band will be attempting to reschedule at a later date.

Shredding event

Mt. Lebanon will hold its final shredding event of the year on Sept. 22. Iron Mountain will shred confidential papers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive, off Cedar Boulevard.

Chemical collection

Pennsylvania Resources Council will offer a Household Chemical Collection from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 22, in South Park. Individuals can drop off automotive fluids, household cleaners, pesticides, paints and other household chemicals for a cost of $3 per gallon (a few exceptions apply), cash only. Frontier Heritage Weekend

Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village will host Frontier Heritage Weekend Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23, with special extended hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Get a first-hand look at the everyday lives of 18th century frontier tradesmen and discover the skills necessary to survive in the Western Pennsylvania wilderness. Visitors can also test their skills at a tomahawk-throwing station, an important tool and weapon used on the 18th-century frontier. Festival of Bands

The Mt. Lebanon High School Blue Devil Marching Band’s 24th Annual Festival of Bands will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 22, at the Mt. Lebanon High School stadium, rain or shine. In addition to the Blue Devil’s, who will play music from “The Incredibles,” there will be performances by the Mt. Lebanon Percussion Front and Drumline and the Mt. Voting event

The League of Women Voters’ of Greater Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Library Association will partner to host a voter registration/participation day on Sept. 25. Approximately 35 libraries throughout Allegheny County are participating and volunteers will be available to register new voters, update registrations, provide absentee ballot forms, and check polling places. These events mark the beginning of a long-term effort by both organizations to focus on a civic literacy program in the upcoming year entitled “Democracy in Action @ Your Library.”

Networking event

Band festival

The South Fayette 38th Annual Festival of Bands will take place at 7 p.m. Sept. 28, at the high school stadium. Prostate cancer

St. Clair Hospital will offer a new prostate cancer support group. The group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. the fourth Thursday of each month in the Dunlap Conference Center, Room C, Fourth Floor of the hospital, unless otherwise noted. The next meeting will be on Sept. 27 in the Critical Care Classroom on the Fourth Floor of the hospital. Future meetings are planned for Oct. 25 and Dec. 27. The group is open to individuals diagnosed with prostate cancer throughout their treatment process. Patients can network with individuals with similar experiences and discuss specific concerns. Recycling/composting

The Pennsylvania Resources Council will offer the following workshops:

• Backyard composting workshop, 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sept. 22, at Castle Shannon Public Library. Course fee includes 90 minutes of instruction plus a free 82-gallon Garden Earth compost bin. Cost is $70 per person or $75 per couple (includes one composting bin).

• Recycling Awareness, 7 to 8 p.m. Sept. 25, at Mt. Lebanon Public Library. The course includes 60 minutes of instruction plus a 32-gallon blue recycling bin. Cost is $50 per person or $55 per couple (includes one recycling bin).
