At Friendship Village of South Hills, a Lifespace Community located in Upper St. Clair, not only are residents encouraged to participate in activities, but team members are as well. One example is the ballroom dancing class. Kathy Havel, human resources director and dance instructor, said they have a “very active group of ladies who come to dance class regularly,” but they don’t have as many men who want to participate. To overcome this challenge, team members working in the community were invited to join the class. Several servers from the culinary team attend, in addition to drivers, the concierge and the environmental services lead. Residents and team members have great social interaction, which helps them learn about each other and form friendships which may not have happened otherwise. Dancing provides physical activity, and ultimately gives people a mental work out as they try to stay on beat and remember various steps and patterns, she said. One unexpected result of this blended dance class is that four generations of people participate. The youngest is a server who is 20, and the oldest is a 95-year-old resident, with several generations represented in between.
