Mt. Lebanon recycling

Environmental is offering an electronic items disposal service to the residents and businesses of Mt. Lebanon.

Most electronic devices will be recycled free of charge from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive, off Cedar Boulevard.

Peters Creek Historical Society

The Peters Creek Historical Society welcomes guest speakers Dick Gaetano and Rob Throckmorton to its meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 26 in the social room of Wrights United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Peters Township.

Both speakers are fellow coin club members and will present a program on the commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark expedition into the Louisiana Purchase. The talk will encompass local re-enactment history and a discussion of the coin.

Their program was presented to the National Coin Show held in Pittsburgh this past spring.

Back-to-school events at SHIM

South Hills Interfaith Movement will host three back-to-school celebrations to provide more than 700 backpacks, donated by CentiMark Corp., and new school supplies to children in the South Hills.

At the events, children will have the opportunity to choose a new backpack and the school supplies they need for a successful academic year. The schedule:

• 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 at Pleasant Hills Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave.

• 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 16 at SHIM Family Center, 41 Macek Drive, Baldwin Borough

Regardless of income, all students in kindergarten through 12th grades living in these school districts are eligible to receive backpacks and supplies: Baldwin-Whitehall, Bethel Park, Keystone Oaks, Mt. Lebanon, South Park and Upper St. Clair.

South Hills Coin Club

The next meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. Aug. 13 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park. All members and the general public are invited.

Summer festival

Our Lady of Grace Parish in Scott Township, partner parish of St. Bernard’s in Mt. Lebanon, will hosts its annual summer festival Aug. 14-17 at 1734 Bower Hill Road.

Restaurant-prepared meals will be served from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. each day: Bistecca Steakhouse on Wednesday, Cooked Goose Catering on Thursday, the Other Place on Friday and Texas Roadhouse on Saturday. Cost for dinner, drink and dessert is $15.

Following the dinners is live entertainment every night until 10, along with a Kids’ Corner, rides, bingo, games, raffles and festival food.

Hilltoppers of Scott Township

The Hilltoppers of Scott Township, a senior citizens group, will hold its monthly meeting Aug. 14 at Covenant-Community Presbyterian Church, 1630 Greentree Road, Scott Township.

Doors open at 11 a.m. for fellowship. Please bring a brown bag lunch and beverage to eat at noon. The Good Shepherd Church Handbell Musicians will perform. Visitors are welcome, and new members are needed. For information, call 412-341-8640.

Flea market

Bethel Park Recreation’s monthly flea market is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Port Authority Parking Lot on the corner of Brightwood and Lytle roads.

Vendor fees are $10 for Bethel Park residents with used items, $14 for residents with new items and $14 for nonresidents.

Bethel Park concert

The Bethel Park Community Foundation will host its sixth and final 2019 Dean Streator Concert from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Bethel Park Community Center, featuring the Pittsburgh Banjo Club.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome to benefit the community foundation.

Senior lunch, movie

Mt. Lebanon Recreation will host a senior luncheon and movie matinee on Aug. 20 in Room A at the recreation center, 900 Cedar Blvd.

A presentation on “The Top Ways to Achieve More Wellness” is at 11 a.m., followed by lunch. The movie is from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Senior adults and their adult guests are invited. Mt. Lebanon residency is not required.

Preregistration is requested. Walk-ins are not encouraged and will only be accepted if space permits. A late fee is charged.

Junior Women’s Club

Mt. Lebanon Junior Women’s Club will host a new member social at 7 p.m. Aug. 22.

The club is a social, civic and philanthropic organization.

Performing arts classes

Registration for dance, theater and piano classes for the Carnegie Performing Arts Center School will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 19-21 at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center Studios, 150 E. Main St.

Classes offered include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, pre dance, children’s drama, musical theater and piano lessons.

Students at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center School are invited to perform in four full-stage productions during the year: “The Nutcracker,” a Christmas classic taking place for two weekends in December; the charming original ballet of “Sleeping Beauty” in March;, the adventurous dramatic tale of “Treasure Island” in April; and the June school recital.

Dance classes at Spencer Y

Spencer Family YMCA in Bethel Park is offering a classical ballet and dance . Classes begin Sept. 3 under the direction of Virginia Nicoll, who has specialized in classical ballet training for adults and children for more than 25 years. Her students learn confidence, discipline, musicality and respect for the arts.

Classes include First Steps Ballet, Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, II, III, and Ballet III through IV with Pointe and Kids’ Luigi Jazz. Adult ballet offers both morning and evening classes. Students have performance opportunities plus receive classical training.

Nicoll was artistic director of Southwest Ballet Company and has worked for the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater and Civic Light Opera Academy, and she specializes in movement for special populations.

Memory Café

St. David’s Neighborhood Memory Café will continue an educational series on dementia. The next meeting is from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 7 at 905 E. McMurray Road, Peters Township, with the topic “Understanding Dementia” presented by Patricia Tylka, hospice specialist with Kindred Hospice.

The Neighborhood Memory Café is a monthly support group for caregivers and their loved ones. The NMC provides an opportunity to meet and socialize with others experiencing the same journey while providing support and education. The meeting is open to the public.

Addiction support

Life Recovery, a confidential Christian recovery group for any addiction, holds an open meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesdays at South Hills Assembly of God, 2725 Bethel Church Road in Bethel Park.

Family Rescue, support and healing for family members and loved ones negatively impacted by addiction, also meets at 7 p.m., then separates into its own small group.

Support group meeting

The first of three monthly Washington County Autism and Special Education Support Group meetings is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 25 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 905 E. McMurray Road, Peters Township.

“Understanding the Evaluation and IEP Process” is the September topic, featuring a presentation by the Parent Education and Advocacy Leadership Center to educate parents and families with children who have disabilities and special health care needs.

Support series

The St. Bernard/Our Lady of Grace Parish partners in Mt. Lebanon/Scott/Dormont will conduct a bereavement support series for those who have experienced he loss of a loved one in recent months or years.

The sessions are free, open to the public and provide a safe space to talk with others who are grieving. The group will be facilitated by Paula Elliott and held at St. Bernard Church, Fontenay Center, 311 Washington Road, Pittsburgh.

• Almost Kindergarten program will be held at 1 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Sept. 3-26. This one-hour class will teach kindergarten-based concepts and social skills and is intended for those children entering kindergarten in the fall of 2020. This class will be taught by a certified teacher and optional assessment is available throughout the year. Registration is limited. • How to Pay for College program will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 29. Kim McCurdy, a Higher Education Access Partner for PHEAA, will present information on the financial aid application process, what types of aid might be available for students, and strategies to start thinking about affordability before your students get ready to apply for post-secondary school admission. Mt. Lebanon

• Salvaging the Fleet: 2 p.m. Aug. 21

Most Americans have an understanding of the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Few are acquainted with the aftermath in which the Navy undertook the job of clearing the harbor and salvaging what was left of the U.S. battle fleet.

Mike Plaskett, co-host of 90.5-FM’s “Rhythm Sweet & Hot,” will tell stories and share photos of the accomplishment: ships lifted off the muddy bottom of Pearl Harbor, battleships rolled over and refloated, and warships rebuilt and sent back to battle.
