Mt. Lebanon Public Library hosts critically acclaimed author

Mt. Lebanon Public Library will present An Evening with Colleen Oakley at 7 o’clock Jan. 13.

Oakley is the critically acclaimed author of “Before I Go,” “Close Enough to Touch” and the forthcoming “You Were There, Too.” Her novels have been longlisted for the Southern Book Prize twice and shortlisted for the French Reader’s Prize. They have been translated into 18 languages, optioned for film, and have received numerous accolades.

A former magazine editor for Marie Claire and Women’s Health & Fitness, Oakley’s articles and essays have been featured in The New York Times, Ladies’ Home Journal, Women’s Health, Redbook, Parade, Woman’s Day, Fitness, Health, Marie Claire and Martha Stewart Weddings.

She will discuss her new novel, which is based on carefully researched scientific studies of mutual dreaming and precognition, and is the story of a young woman torn between the husband she loves and the man, literally, in her dreams. Her novels will be available to purchase from Riverstone Books at the event.

  • Slovak Heritage, 7 p.m. Jan. 6. Joe Bielecki will discuss Slovak folk art, such as paintings on glass, corn husk dolls and straw art.
  • Lebo History Night, 7 o’clock Jan. 7. Facilitators Glenn Flickinger and Scott Moore, local history enthusiasts with expertise on a wide range of topics, will discuss Teddy Roosevelt, the Rough Riders and the Spanish-American War.
  • Get Healthy: Plant-Based Nutrition 101, 7 p.m. Jan. 9, 16 and 30. Registered dietitian M.J. Costello teaches a comprehensive overview of plant-based nutrition. The three weekly sessions are geared toward learning the basics of plant-based diets, and the sorting of fact from fiction as it relates to optimal nutrition.
  • Fact or Fiction: Dispelling the Myths of Hospice,

1 p.m. Jan. 10. Hear a thorough review of the hospice Medicare benefit and common misperceptions associated with this specific healthcare entitlement. The program is presented by the Family Hospice Speakers Bureau.
