Preschool-A-Palooza

To help area parents gather the information they need to choose the best preschool for their child, the Peters Township Public Library will offer Preschool-A-Palooza from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 19. Book/jewelry sale

An indoor winter book and jewelry sale will be held Jan. 18 and 19 at The Church of the Atonement, Episcopal, 618 Washington Ave., Carnegie. Friday hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday hours are 9 a.m. to noon and reopening from 1 to 2 p.m. for a bag sale. Sale items include books, jewelry, lamps, puzzles and wall hangings. FUNDRAISERS

Spaghetti dinner

“Take Action for Jackson,” a spaghetti dinner to benefit Jackson Beck, a 2-year-old from Upper St. Clair who became paralyzed after contracting Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) and is currently living at the Children’s Home, will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19, in Fellowship Hall at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Upper St. Clair. Cost is $10 at the door or online through the “Take Action for Jackson” Facebook page. There is also a raffle of more than 50 baskets, most valued at over $100 each. Donations can also be made through the Jackson Beck Go Fund Me initiative. Proceeds will be used to facilitate his transition to his home and all that is involved is supporting this child for his lifetime challenges. Symphony of Food

WOMEN of Southwestern PA’s 12th annual Symphony of Food will be held Jan. 25 at Bella Sera Event Venue, Canonsburg. Doors open at 6 p.m. Participating restaurants include Giant Eagle Market District, Toscana Brick Oven, La Tavola Italiana, Au “Grottens” Café and Catering, Mediterra Bakehouse and Signature Desserts. Scrapbookers Getaway

The Jackie Banks Memorial Scrapbooker’s Getaway Weekend 2 will be held Feb. 1-3, 2019, at the Doubletree by Hilton in Washington. Meals, overnight accommodations and crop space are included, and a daycropper option is available. Library fundraiser

Tickets are now on sale for Mt. Lebanon Public Library’s 9th Annual Brews for a Chili Night IX, set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 26, at the library. The beer and chili fundraiser will feature live music, more than two dozen craft beers, cider, soft drinks, a wide array of chili prepared by pro and amateur chefs, snacks and desserts. Volleyball fundraiser

Peters Township High School National Honor Society’s 13th Annual Volleyball Tournament to benefit the Make-A-Wish Scholarship Fund will take place from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31 in the high school gym. Each school in the district will organize a faculty team that will compete against each other to be crowned the champion. Hot dogs, nachos, soda, candy and baked goods will be available. Environmental education

The Petrochemical Invasion of Western PA, Its Environmental Consequences and What Can Be Done about It will be offered at 7 p.m. Jan. 15, at Unitarian Universalist Church of the South Hills (Sunnyhill), Mt. Lebanon. The event is sponsored by the Izaak Walton League. A major part of this event will be a discussion between audience activists and the presenters, which will include: Matt Mehalik of the Breathe Collaborative, Patricia DeMarco, author of “Pathways to Our Sustainable Future — Global Perspective from Pittsburgh”; Robert Schmetzer, Beaver County Marcellus Community and Citizens to protect the Ambridge Reservoir; Terrie Baumgardner, activist, field organizer for Clean Air Council and volunteer with Beaver Marcellus Community and Citizens to Protect the Ambridge Reservoir.

Traveling exhibit

Baldwin night at the new Mt. Lebanon Historical Society Headquarters will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 15, at the headquarters located at 794 Washington Road. Lungs at Work, an award-winning nonprofit federal black lung clinic located in McMurray, will sponsor an outreach event from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 22, at the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) Local 1197 office, 20 North Main Street, Ellsworth. Health assessments, pulmonary screenings, pulse oximetry testing, benefits counseling and assistance with federal Black Lung applications will be offered to coal miners who may have black lung disease. Nutrition

The Mind Body Center located at 1720 Washington Road, Suite 207 in Upper St. Clair continues its Skinny Jeans Challenge by offering knowledge about nutrition in the winter. Sample supplements that will boost vital nutrients that are needed in the colder months, and learn about a whole foods diet and how to pick healthy foods for the season.
