Lions BBQ

Bethel Park Lions Club will hold its Summer BBQ from 4 to 7 p.m. July 19 at Lions Park on Irishtown Road.

The dinner includes a pulled pork sandwich, one-quarter chicken, five-bean baked beans, redskin potato salad and a drink for $12 per person. (No substitutions). Rita’s Italian Ice will be available for purchase.

Proceeds benefit Lions charities and also used for maintenance of Bethel Lions Park. Please bring your unwanted eyeglasses to be donated to the needy.

Bethel Park Recreation is holding its monthly flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20 at the Port Authority Parking Lot at the corner of Brightwood and Lytle Roads. Other flea market Dates are Aug. 17 and Sept. 21.

St. Louise flea market

The DeMarillac Guild of St. Louise DeMarillac Church will hold a flea market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18 and 19, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20, in the LeGras Parish Center (lower level), 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair.

Glass recycling

The Pennsylvania Resources Council (PRC) has been hosting “pop-up” glass recycling collection events in response to the sudden removal of glass from many of the region’s residential curbside recycling programs.

The next event is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 20 at Village Square Mall, sponsored by Upper St. Clair Township

Residents can drop off all colors of glass bottles, jars and jugs at no cost. PRC staff and volunteers will be on-site to assist recyclers. The preferred packing and delivery method is glass loosely placed in plastic bins or cardboard boxes.

Since launching in early March, the pop-up glass campaign has attracted more than 3,700 participants and arranged for the recycling of 63 tons of glass.

PRC’s network is sponsored by CAP Glass, Owens Illinois and Straub Brewery in conjunction with several local municipalities impacted by recent changes in curbside recycling regulations.

Bethel Park concert

The Bethel Park Community Foundation will host the 2019 Dean Streator Concert Series show on July 21 featuring the Mon Valley Community Band directed by Max Gonano.

The concert begins at 2:30 in the Bethel Park Community Center.

Admission is free, but donations benefit Bethel Park Community Foundation.

Concordia open house

Concordia of the South Hills will host an education session and open house from 1 to 3 p.m. July 21 and 22 from at the retirement community’s campus, 1300 Bower Hill Road, Mt. Lebanon.

A brief session on “What Makes A Retirement Community So Appealing” will be followed by tours of apartments and common areas. Refreshments will be served in the Harmony Room on the ground floor of the community.

Day camps

The Bible Chapel in Peters Township is offering day camps:

• Sports camps – sport-specific morning sessions, and multi-sport afternoon sessions. Participants can register for half-day or full-day camps, which are scheduled from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. Basketball, July 22-25; soccer, July 29-Aug. 1; wrestling, Aug. 5-8.

Hospice program

St. David’s Neighborhood Memory Café will host Patricia Tylka, hospice specialist with Kindred Hospice, for a program from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 3.

Square dance

Preschool openings

John McMillan Preschool in Bethel Park has limited space available in its Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4-year-olds.

Through hands-on learning activities, children will practice social, fine motor and self-help skills that are essential in today’s kindergarten classrooms. There is increased emphasis on pre-reading, math, science, writing and language skills

Each day will include free play and gross motor time. Afternoon enrichment classes will be offered throughout the school year to extend your child’s day.

Lions bag, broom sale

McMurray Lions Club is selling high-quality vinyl trash bags.

Heavy-duty bags are available in 30- and 33-gallon size for garbage, and tall white bags for kitchen use. Brooms are available, as well.

• Summer Scrumptiousness: 11 a.m. July 29 for students in seventh grade and older.

• Breakout games: 7 p.m. July 29 for students in seventh grade and older. Participants will have 60 minutes to work together to figure out clues and solve a mystery in order to “escape” the library.

• A Universe of Stories with Mike Plaskett, 2 p.m. July 15. The host of WESA-FM’s Rhythm Sweet & Hot musical variety program will share stories from the Big Band era and sample music including dance bands, swing bands, hot jazz performers and memorable singers of the 1930s and ’40s.

• Summer Reading Salon, 7 p.m. July 17. Library staff members Sharon Bruni and Karen Brown host the salon, in which participants share book recommendations, discuss recent reads, enjoy light summer fare and make some new friends. • “1,000 Books to Read Before You Die” by Skype with James Mustich, 7 p.m. July 18.

Literary veteran James Mustich will share how he came to write “1,000 Books to Read Before You Die: A Life-Changing List.” He also will share his personal favorites and talk to the audience about theirs, offering insight and recommendations along the way.

• “Star Wars” Day, 1 p.m. July 20

Kids and their families can travel to a galaxy far, far away for Jedi challenges, crafts, snacks, and a visit from 2 to 3 by the 501st Legion’s Garrison Carida, home of the greatest villains in the Empire.

• “What We Can Do For A Warming Earth,” 7 p.m. July 22

Most Americans are concerned about climate change, but many are worried that mitigating the risk would entail giving up their comfortable lifestyle and wreaking havoc on the economy. The U.S. House of Representatives has proposed a new solution that could actually stimulate our economy and improve our health while significantly reducing America’s greenhouse gas emissions. The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act enacts a rising fee on carbon emissions and then returns the collected fees to all American households equally. Its features have attracted bipartisan support, and a grassroots group, Citizens’ Climate Lobby, is focused on getting it passed. Chris Mullin will explain the details of the act, the ways that CCL works towards its passage and how supporters can get involved.

• “A Universe of Stories from India,” 2:30 p.m. July 23

Nandini Mandal, artistic director for the Nandanik Dance Troupe, presents “Navarasa,” stories from ancient India through dance and music with interactive sessions. Stories, tales and ancient fables unfold in vibrant colors through hand gestures (Mudras), body movements and rhythm patterns that suit all abilities.

• Summer Reading Salon, 1:30 p.m. July 27

The salon aims to bring book lovers together to share book recommendations, discuss recent reads, enjoy some light summer fare, and make some new friends. South Fayette Township Library

• “Cruise into Kindergarten: Outer Space” will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 17 for children entering Kindergarten in the fall. Children are asked to bring snow boots, coats, hats, gloves and snow pants if they have them, to serve as “space suits.” Registration is required.

• Sensory Storytime will be held at 11 a.m. for children ages 2 to 5. All children are welcome, including those with special needs. Registration is required.

• Citizen Science Lab Experiments will be held at 1 p.m. July 20 for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. Learn about the incredible world of science with the Citizen Science Lab and do hands-on experiments. Registration is required.
