Kosher cooking

The summer edition of “Love and Knaidels: Kosher Cooking for a Cause” will be held at 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Heritage Players shows

The Heritage Players will present the family musical “James and the Giant Peach Jr.” Aug. 2-4 at the Seton Center, 1900 Pioneer Ave., Brookline. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m., and the Sunday matinee is at 2:00. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for children ages 4-12, and free for children 3 and under. Also, the Heritage Players will hold auditions for Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 and 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Seton Center.

Performers ages 8 and older are sought. They are asked to prepare 32 bars of a classic Broadway song, and be prepared to move. An accompanist will be provided.

Senior fitness classes

Join a certified senior fitness specialist for two classes Aug. 2 at Castle Shannon Library.

Classes are $5 each and designed to increase muscle strength, joint stability, and joint range of movement, resulting in improved posture and ability to perform activities of daily living.

The senior strength and stability course, 10:45 11:30 a.m., is performed from a seated position and can be accomplished by all. The class consists of stretching, resistance training, posture exercises, and basic coordination exercises. Ample resistance bands will be provided, and limited handheld weights will be available Participants may bring their own weights.

The senior strength, stability and balance course, 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., incorporates all of the above plus some standing balance exercises and very light aerobic work.

Hospice program

St. David’s Neighborhood Memory Café will host Patricia Tylka, hospice specialist with Kindred Hospice, for a program from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 3.

Bethel Park concert

The Keystone Chorus is featured in the fifth presentation Bethel Park Community Foundation’s Dean Streator Concert Series.

The concert takes place from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Bethel Park Community Center. Admission is free, but donations are welcome to benefit the Community Foundation

Since the 1950s, the Keystone Chorus has provided entertainment with barbershop-style singing. Rehearsals are held from 7:30 to 9:45 p.m. Tuesdays at Hamilton Presbyterian Church, 4500 Hamilton Road, Bethel Park, and are open to the public and potential members.

Watch and clock collectors

Allegheny Chapter 37 of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors will meet at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 4 in Room 2701 of Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, 4765 Forbes Ave. Gain access by using the building entrance off the Morewood Gardens parking lot.

The speaker is Clint Gellar, senior adviser scientist at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory in West Mifflin. The topic will be “American Watchmaking and the Civil War: Mutual Impacts.” Gellar has authored more than a dozen articles as well as two books, including “The Authentication and Appreciation of Civil War Timepieces.”

Admission is free and open to the public. There is a $10 fee to reserve a table for the buying and selling of horological items.

Open mic

Musicians, songwriters, poets and audience members to attend the Artists At Atonement Open Mic, scheduled for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Aug. 4 at the Church of the Atonement, 618 Washington Ave., Carnegie.

Performers are advised to arrive about 20 minutes early to sign up to perform.

Movie in the park

South Fayette Township’s Movies in the Park Series continues with “Coco.”

The movie is scheduled for 8:30 to 11 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Rotary pavilion at Fairview Park, 129 Greenwood Drive. Admission is free.

The plot of “Coco”:

Despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, young Miguel dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol Ernesto de la Cruz. Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead. Film screening

Dinner for a Dollar

Community of Christ Church, 3472 South Park Road, Bethel Park, will host “Dinner for a Dollar” from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 8.

On the menu are spaghetti, bread and rolls, salad and desserts. Donations of $1 for person or $3 per family are accepted, but not required.

No reservations are needed. No take out will be available, including dessert.

Performing arts classes

Registration for dance, theater and piano classes for the Carnegie Performing Arts Center School will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Aug. 19-21 at the Carnegie Performing Arts Center Studios, 150 E. Main St.

Classes offered include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, pre dance, children’s drama, musical theater and piano lessons.

Saxophonist Lee Robinson who has been an active participate on the Pittsburgh jazz scene for more than 35 years. He has performed in several R&B show bands and jazz ensembles, blending his improvisation with different styles of music for years.

• Swap Shop Social: Fiber Frenzy, 2-4 p.m. Aug. 4

Do you have yarn, floss, fabric, patterns, and other crafting supplies and materials that you no longer need or use? Then bring a bag or box, no more than two, to the library’s swap shop and take something new home. The event is free and open to the public, even to those who have nothing to swap.
