Dementia program

A program about Dementia Friends, which helps families and professionals better understand how it feels to be living with dementia and its related challenges, is scheduled for June 19 at Baptist Homes in Mt. Lebanon.

Registration starts at 4 p.m., and the program is from 4:30 to 6:30, presented by Stacie Bonenberger and Anneliese Perry, senior quality improvement specialists.

Pet fair

Hearts and Paws Pet Care and Adoption Fair is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22 in the agricultural building above the South Park Fairgrounds.

More than 60 rescue groups and shelters, animal product vendors and service providers will be participating, and festival food, including vegetarian delights, will be available.

This year’s event will feature an animal art show and a kids’ corner with fun-filled activities for the whole family. For more information, call 412-277-1096.

Document shredding

Mt. Lebanon will host a document shredding event by Iron Mountain from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 22 at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive, off Cedar Boulevard.

Summer Fest

A Summer Fest for children and their families is planned from noon to 3 p.m. June 22 at Hillcrest Christian Academy, 2500 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park.

Activities include a bounce house, games, prizes, family color war (wear light-colored T-shirts) and more. Extra parking will be available at South Hills Assembly of God, 2725 Bethel Church Road, with shuttle service to the school.

Movie night

The Hastings neighborhood in South Fayette Township invites the public to attend a movie night featuring “The Jungle Book” on Hastings Green, 1006 Preserve Lane.

The event starts at 8 p.m. June 22. Bring a blanket or chair and snacks, or purchase food and drinks on site. Rain date is Thurs. June 27.

Historical society program

Tom Uram, president of the Washington County Coin Club and the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists, will be guest speaker for the Peters Creek Historical Society meeting at 7:30 p.m. June 24 at Wrights United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Peters Township.

The program will focus on Apollo 11 coinage minted in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary marking man’s first steps on the moon. On July 20, 1969 the world watched as Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin made the unprecedented achievement, one that involved the work of about 400,000 Americans.

The historical society also conducts tours of the Enoch Wright House on Venetia Road. Guided tours are scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. June 25.

Family event

Bethany Lutheran Church in Bethel Park invites families to a summer family event called “Athens: Paul’s Dangerous Journey to Share the Truth,” which will be held from June 17 to 21 at the church, 5303 Madison Ave.

Senior lunch

A lunch for seniors will be hosted at noon June 18 at Chabad of the South Hills in Mt. Lebanon.

Gallagher Home Services will present a program on advance care planning and advance directives. Suggested donation is $5, and the building is wheelchair-accessible.

Academy summer programs

Mount Lebanon Academy, 400 Cochran Road, will offer STEAM Camps the week of June 24-28 in robotics, food science, chemistry and engineering. Classes will meet daily from 9:30 to noon or 1 to 3:30 p.m. These camps are geared to students in first through sixth grades.

SAT and ACT classes will be offered as private tutorials or group classes. SAT and ACT classes do not follow the session calendar and are scheduled once weekly July 8 through Aug. 12, with the exception of the first and final week when classes meet twice weekly. Any absences can be made up in a private tutorial, however, tuition rates will be adjusted accordingly.

All other classes and tutorials in math, reading, language arts, composition and other subjects meet twice weekly for a three week session beginning July 8. Tutorials in all academic areas can also be scheduled according to your own time schedule.

Preschool openings

John McMillan Preschool in Bethel Park has limited space available in its Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4-year-olds.

Through hands-on learning activities, children will practice social, fine motor and self-help skills that are essential in today’s kindergarten classrooms. There is increased emphasis on pre-reading, math, science, writing and language skills

Each day will include free play and gross motor time. Afternoon enrichment classes will be offered throughout the school year to extend your child’s day.

Family Fun Night

Spencer Family YMCA in Bethel Park will host a family fun night open house from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 21. Summer Dance Camps

Spencer Family Y, Bethel Park, will offer the following dance camps:

n Prince and Princess Dance Camp for children ages 3-5 includes a dance class, craft and time for a snack from home, plus a creative play. Session I runs June 17 and 24; Session II runs July 11 and 18. Both sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to noon and are $30 per session.

n Swan Lake Camp for ages 6-12 will teach students ballet, jazz and character dances. A craft of tutu construction will also be part of this camp. Starting now and continuing through Aug. 23, the library will be open for summer hours on Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Monday through Thursday, hours will remain 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Paint & Sip — From 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. June 20, join us for an evening of painting while enjoying light bites, wine and the company of friends. The fee is $20 and must be paid at the time of registration. Please sign up early as we require a minimum of six participants to hold this event and only have space for 12 people. Evening of chamber music

Temple Emanuel in Mt. Lebanon presents an evening of chamber music on June 20.

The concert, sponsored by the Diskin Music Fund and Temple Emanuel, starts at 7:30 and features musicians from the Pittsburgh Jewish Music Festival: Nurit Pacht, violin; Aron Zelkowicz, cello; Rodrigo Ojeda, piano.

Mt. Lebanon Public Library

• “Write or Die” meets at6:45 p.m. June 25. The science fiction, fantasy and horror writing and critique group welcomes experienced writers and newcomers who have yet to see anything in print.

• “Mahjong Culture Around the World is at 7 p.m. June 27. Learn why and how different cultures have shaped the game, as presented by Gregg Swain, an art enthusiast and historian who wrote “Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game.”

• “The Allegheny Observatory and the Field of Astronomy” is at 7 p.m. July 1. Andrew R. Zentner, a theoretical cosmologist at the University of Pittsburgh, will share some of Pittsburgh’s contributions to the field of astronomy, discuss the Allegheny Observatory and explain his field of science.

Genealogical society meeting

The Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society will hold its annual meeting and conference from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 22 at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Museum Theatre.

Rick Sayre, an expert in Western Pennsylvania and Ohio records, will be the presenter.

The event is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Concordia open house

Concordia of the South Hills will host an education session and open house from 1 to 3 p.m. June 23 and 24 at the retirement community’s campus, 1300 Bower Hill Road, Mt. Lebanon.

A brief education session on “Finding Value in Retirement Living” will be followed by tours of apartments and common areas. Refreshments will be served in the Harmony Room on the ground floor of the community.
