Classic car show

The 24th annual Mt. Lebanon Police Department Classic Car Show and Festival is scheduled for July 7.

Washington Road will be closed from Lebanon Avenue to Cedar Boulevard to allow vehicle owners can showcase their beauties.

The free event features food vendors and live music by the Good Guys Duo. Sponsors are the Mt. Lebanon Police Department, Mt. Lebanon Police Association, Dormont-Mt. Lebanon-Castle Shannon Rotary Club, Mt. Lebanon Recreation Department and Pontiac-Oakland Club of Western Pennsylvania.

Registration is from 9 a.m. to noon, when judging starts. Proceeds benefit police youth programs.

Community Band South concert

The Bethel Park Community Foundation hosts the opening of the 2019 Dean Streator Concert Series on July 7 featuring Community Band South, directed by Jim Bennett and Max Gonano.

The concert begins at 2:30 in the Bethel Park Community Center.

Admission is free, but donations are accepted to benefit Bethel Park Community Foundation.

Open discussions

Bower Hill Community Church is hosting a series of open discussions of faith and sexuality, starting July 7.

The discussions are open to all, especially LGBT Christians, skeptical spiritual seekers and anyone who has felt hurt by the church.

During each session, the first 15 minutes will reflect on certain issues of faith and sexuality. The rest of the hour will be spent in guided discussion.

The sessions are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sundays in the Friendship Room of the church, 70 Moffett St., Mt. Lebanon. Weekly topics are:

July 7 – Finding a God of welcome in the Bible;

July 14 – The long road: a history of social stigma;

July 21 – Woundedness and wellness, naming the pain;

July 28 – The churches and their stances;

Aug 4 – How families can offer support;

Aug 11 – How faith can heal our anger and hurt;

Aug 18 and 25 – A personal journey.

South Hills Coin Club

The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. July 9 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park. All members and the general public are invited. This month’s program will be the annual pizza party. A 50/50 will be offered and children’s prizes awarded.

Garden Club

Giant Oaks Garden Club will meet at 11 a.m. July 11 for its monthly luncheon meeting and program at St David’s Anglican Church, 905 East McMurray Road, Peters Township.

Vacation Bible school

Vacation Bible school at Bethel Presbyterian Church will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 13, with lunch included.

Pre-registration is required at the church web site, www.bethelpresby.org, or by calling 412-835-0405. Children age 3 (potty trained) to those entering fourth grade, will learn how Jesus takes care of us in stories, game, crafts and music. There is an $8 charge to attend.

Students also can earn free tickets to buy food and play games later the same day at the block party at the church from 5 to 8 p.m. Admission to the block party is free. The program includes inflatables, children’s games and activities, Kona Ice and food and drinks.

Flea market

The DeMarillac Guild of St. Louise DeMarillac Church will hold a flea market from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 18 and 19, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. July 20, in the LeGras Parish Center (lower level), 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair.

Day camps

The Bible Chapel in Peters Township is offering day camps:

• Sports camps – sport-specific morning sessions, and multi-sport afternoon sessions. Participants can register for half-day or full-day camps, which are scheduled from 1 a.m. to 4 p.m.Basketball, July 22-25; soccer, July 29-Aug. 1; wrestling, Aug. 5-8.

Hilltoppers

The Hilltoppers of Scott Township, a group for senior citizens, will meet July 10 at Covenant-Community Presbyterian Church, 1630 Greentree Road, Scott Township. Doors open at 11 a.m. for fellowship. Bring a brown bag lunch and beverage to eat at noon. Following lunch and a brief business meeting, vocalist and pianist Patricia Reavel will present the program, “Hits Spanning the Ages.” Visitors and new members welcome. Preschool openings

John McMillan Preschool in Bethel Park has limited space available in its Monday-Wednesday-Friday class for 4-year-olds.

Through hands-on learning activities, children will practice social, fine motor and self-help skills that are essential in today’s kindergarten classrooms. There is increased emphasis on pre-reading, math, science, writing and language skills

Each day will include free play and gross motor time. Afternoon enrichment classes will be offered throughout the school year to extend your child’s day.

Summer Dance Camps

Spencer Family Y, Bethel Park, will offer the following dance camps:

• Prince and Princess Dance Camp for children ages 3-5 includes a dance class, craft and time for a snack from home, plus a creative play. Session II runs July 11 and 18 from 10:30 a.m. to noon for $30 per session.

• Swan Lake Camp for ages 6-12 will teach students ballet, jazz and character dances. A craft of tutu construction will also be part of this camp. Lions bag, broom sale

McMurray Lions Club is selling high-quality vinyl trash bags.

Heavy-duty bags are available in 30- and 33-gallon size for garbage, and tall white bags for kitchen use. Brooms are available, as well.

TOPS meetings

Bethel Park Public Library will hold the following programs:

• Copycat Painting – The program will be held at 2 p.m. July 1 for grades 3 and 4; 3 p.m. for grades 5 and 6; and 7 p.m. for teens. Bring a small canvas to class and walk away with your own version of Vincent Van Gogh’s “A Starry Night.” To register, call 412-835-2207.

• What all can I do with my dog? – You have a dog; now what? Teach your dog to behave at home and in public. Learn enrichment and engaging activities that you can do at home to performing at dog shows. Learn how to keep your dog engaged, happy and healthy during all phases of his/her lifespan. • Junior ranger – Become a National Park Service Junior Ranger Night Explorer! The program is scheduled for 10 a.m. July 13 for children in grades K-2 and 11 a.m. for grades 3-6. Learn about the night sky and make a planisphere to determine where the constellations are. This will get you started, but packets will be sent home for completion. Once you complete your packet, you can mail it in to receive your official badge from the NPS. Frank Sarris Public Library

The Library will be closed in observance of the July 4 holiday, but look for Wonder Woman, Princess Leia and Spider Man along with some of your favorite library workers in the Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade!

Starting now and continuing through Aug. 23, the library will be open for summer hours on Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; Monday through Thursday, hours will remain 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Summer reading programs for all ages will run now through Aug. 23. Get more details at the Library.

Summer Story Time for preschoolers will be Mondays and Tuesdays through July 29, from 10:30 to 11 a.m.

Family Nights will be on Tuesdays through July 30, 6:30 to 7:30.

Mt. Lebanon

“The Allegheny Observatory and the Field of Astronomy” is at 7 p.m. July 1. Andrew R. Zentner, a theoretical cosmologist at the University of Pittsburgh, will share some of Pittsburgh’s contributions to the field of astronomy, discuss the Allegheny Observatory and explain his field of science.
