Spring craft fair

PRIME TIME Adult Care will hold its annual spring craft fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 6, in the Christian Life Center at Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park. Sixty-five crafters will be on site. Lunch and refreshments will be available throughout the day. Admission is free. Proceeds benefit PRIME TIME Adult Care, a nonprofit specializing in the medical supervision and mental and physical stimulation of the frail elderly, those with functional impairments, and those with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Mini-THON

Upper St. Clair High School’s Mini-THON, a student-led fundraising event supporting childhood cancer research, will be held on April 5, at Fort Couch Middle School. The event, based on Penn State’s THON, will offer a designated “Community Time” from 6:30 to 9 p.m., enabling residents of all ages to participate in games, purchase refreshments and dance. Following Community Time, participating high schoolers will be “locked-in” until 6 a.m. Saturday for a night full of dancing, food, games, and more. Spaghetti dinner

The Men’s Fellowship at Hamilton Presbyterian Church, 4500 Hamilton Road, Castle Shannon, will hold a spaghetti dinner from 4 to 6:30 p.m. April 6. The menu will include spaghetti with meatballs, salad, bread, beverage and cake for dessert. Cost is $8 for adults. Kids 12 and under eat for free. Take-out is available, and tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds benefit The 8th Avenue Place, a mission/shelter in Homestead.

Hoagie fundraiser

Bethel Park High School Band, Bethettes, Orchestra and Top 21 will be selling 12-inch hoagies once again as its main fundraiser. The three types of hoagies, which will be sold at different intervals throughout the school year, include regular (ham, salami, bologna, cheese, lettuce and tomato), special (same as regular but lettuce and tomato are packaged separately; suitable for freezing), and turkey (turkey breast meat and cheese, with lettuce and tomato packaged separately). Cost is $6 per hoagie. Order by April 6; pick up April 13. To order, call 412-831-1786. Orders can also be placed through members of each squad.

Nature program

Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer the program “Flight of the Timberdoodle” at 7:30 p.m. April 2, at Shelter 4 in Mingo Creek County Park. The group will gather in a field at dusk to listen for and observe the American Woodcock and one of the most unique courtship displays in the animal kingdom. Dress for moderate hiking and the weather. A flashlight may be needed on the return hike. Reservations are required at 724-228-6867. There is no fee for this program.

Children’s play

“My Traveling Song,” an original interactive play by Hiawatha Project, will debut April 5-14 at Carnegie Stage, 25 W. Main Street, Carnegie. In the play, especially made for children ages 1-5, a mother and child are confronted with unexpected natural obstacles, but weather through. “My Traveling Song” reveals that connections between loved ones, communities and the physical world around us can help us feel safe, loved and free to imagine a more empathic and playful world. Fabric fair

The Salvation Army’s Greater Pittsburgh Women’s Auxiliary Fabric Fair will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6, at The Salvation Army Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Center located at 1060 McNeilly Road, Mt. Lebanon (next to Seton LaSalle Catholic High School). Free parking is available on site and at two satellite locations from which free shuttles are available: Keystone Oaks High School and Keystone Oaks Middle School. Snacks and lunch items will also be available for purchase. The success of Fabric Fair is a result of the donations of all the items for sale. Donated fabric and related items are always in need, as are additional volunteers to measure and sort fabric in preparation for the fair. Shred event

Easter egg hunt

The Township of Upper St. Clair’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt for children ages 10 and under will be held at 11 a.m. April 6, at the shelter and golf course area adjacent to the McLaughlin Run Activity Center (MAC), 1770 McLaughlin Run Road. Activities and an opportunity for photos with the Easter Bunny begin at 10. Children should dress for the weather and bring a small basket for eggs, which contain either candy or prize-winning numbers. Parking is available in the lots located at the MAC, Public Works Building, Municipal Building and Municipal Tennis Facilities off Morrow Road. This is a free event sponsored by the Upper St. Clair High School Interact Club and Bethel-St. Clair Evening Rotary Club.

City Theatre presents the world premiere of “The Burdens” by Matt Schatz April 6-May 12, on the City Theatere Lester Hamburg Stage. Live theater

PICT Classic Theatre will present “The Heiress” April 6-27, at WQED’s Fred Rogers Studio in Oakland. “The Heiress” tells the story of a wealthy but insecure young woman in 1850s New York City who meets a dashing but penniless bachelor. Desperate for love and willing to risk everything for it, will she finally be blessed by good fortune or naïve in falling for the charm of a handsome opportunist. Pittsburgh Opera returns to the Benedum Center with Puccini’s “La bohème,” through April 7. Set against the backdrop of 1830s Paris, La bohème follows four impoverished artists surviving with little more than friendship, passion, and love for their art. When Rodolfo, a poet, and Mimì, a young seamstress, meet, the two are drawn into a tumultuous and passionate affair with a love that can only be broken by death. Historical event

Woodville Plantation, in collaboration with the Pittsburgh Historical Costume Society, will hold an event on 18th century child’s clothing on April 7 at the plantation located at 1375 Washington Pike, Bridgeville. Speakers Laura Mason Lockard, Tiffany Apan and Kara Gordon will discuss what children would have worn from infancy into young adulthood. The event begins with tours of the Neville House from 1 to 3 p.m. The lecture will take place from 3 to 3:45 inside the still house, with a Q&A following from 3:45 to 4. Jazz festival

The Upper St. Clair Performing Arts Department will host the USC Jazz Festival, designed for musicians in grades 7-12, on April 8. Jazz ensembles from Fort Couch Middle School and the Upper St. Clair High School will work with guest performer and clinician Jim Snidero throughout the day. Under Snidero’s direction, jazz students will perform a concert at 7 p.m. April 8 in the high school theatre. Snidero will also perform as a guest soloist with each ensemble. The concert is free. Special Needs Fair/Expo

The 4th Annual Southwestern Pennsylvania Special Needs Fair & Expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27, at The Pathfinder School, 50 Donati Road, Bethel Park. Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for Peters Township Parks & Recreation’s Bunny Hop and Egg Scramble on April 13, in Peterswood Park. The Bunny Hop is from 10 a.m. to noon for children age 9 and younger (must be accompanied by an adult). There will be games, crafts, entertainment and more. Cost is $5 for residents and $8 for nonresidents. The Egg Scramble will take place at 1 p.m. for children age 2 and under, 1:15 p.m. for children ages 3-5, and 1:30 p.m. for children ages 6-9. Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens’ Spring Flower Show: Gardens of the Rainbow is open now through April 21, featuring prisms, topiaries and interactive experiences for all ages, plus tens of thousands of spring blooms in vibrant floral hues. Keynotes scholarship

Auditions for the Keynotes $10,000 Music Scholarship Competition will be held May 18, at the Mt. Lebanon Fine Arts Theater. Contestants must be full-time music majors in a music school, college or university. Instrumentalists must be under 26 years of age, voice under 30. A high school senior must be accepted for admission as a full-time music major in the fall of 2019.
