School News: Week of June 2
Bethel Park
• Bethel Park High School inducted 14 students into its chapter of Quill and Scroll, the international honorary society for high school journalists.
The awards were presented to students who are members of the Bethel Park High School Hawk Eye online newspaper, Beacon yearbook, Black Hawk TV video production studio and Vernissage literary magazine, and who have excelled in communications work during the 2018-19 school year.
Initiated this year were seniors Alyssa Dixon, Leslie Folino, Alex Magnu, Jay McCann, Alex Noel, Sarah Pellis, Tyler Schultz and Troy Sigafoos; juniors Joseph Bova, Meghan Kanzius, Parker Loera, Alexis Smith, Gabrielle Straub; and sophomore Olivia Westphal.
To be inducted into Quill and Scroll, students must be in 10th through 12th grades, be in the upper third of their class academically, have done superior work in some phase of school publications and be recommended by their publication adviser.
Inducted students received membership pins, award of honor certificates, membership cards and a subscription to Quill and Scroll magazine.
Freshman Anastasia Williams received the Award of Honor for her work on the newspaper and yearbook staff. Freshmen are not eligible for induction into Quill and Scroll, but can receive special recognition for their efforts and contributions.
The Bethel Park High School Quill and Scroll Chapter was established in 1947. Bethel Park High School English Department facilitator Charles Youngs serves as the chapter’s coordinator and as the adviser for the Vernissage literary magazine. English teacher John Allemang is the adviser for the Hawk Eye newspaper and Beacon yearbook, and technology education teacher Brad Kszastowski is the adviser for the Black Hawk TV station.
Delivering the Keynote Address was 1978 Bethel Park High School graduate Andy Amrhein, who spoke about his longtime radio show on KDKA-AM, his weekly segments on KDKA-TV’s Pittsburgh Today Live and his television shows on BPTV, the Bethel Park Municipality’s cable television station.
• Regan Gray, a senior at Bethel Park High School, recently attended a meeting of the Bethel Woman’s Club where she accepted a $3,000 scholarship award.
While at Bethel Park, Regan was active as news editor of the Hawkeye online publication, and she is a member of the Quill and Scroll Honors Society. In the fall, she will attend Ohio University to pursue a journalism degree and hopes to travel internationally to write about issues that affect people around the world.
Regan is the daughter of James and Robin Gray.
• Two Bethel Park High School students received the Top of the Shop Award for the second semester of the 2018-19 school year from the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education.
Receiving the awards were senior Anthony Klase, a student in the diesel technology program, and junior Samuel Delancey, in the building trades program.
They received this award based on their demonstration of outstanding conduct, work ethic, attendance and class proficiency.
• Four Bethel Park High School students received the Extra Effort Award for the fourth quarter of the 2018-19 school year from the Steel Center for Career and Technical Education.
Receiving the award were senior Griffin Hunter (baking), junior Diane Krebs (cosmetology) and sophomores Caitlin Chichwak (cosmetology) and Randy DiPasquale (carpentry).
The awards are given to students who demonstrate outstanding attitude, work ethic, attendance and dependability.
Upper St. Clair
• The 2019 Woman’s Club of Upper St. Clair scholarship winners of $5,000 are Emma Caldart, daughter of Jack and Elke Caldart, who will major in nutritional sciences; Olivia Debski, daughter of Jeff and Jennifer Debski, who will study nursing; and Rachel Harris, daughter of Michael and Stephanie Harris, whose major is undeclared.
A $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Ethan Mann, son of Brian and Heather Mann and grandson of Woman’s Club member, Pat Mann. Ethan plans to major in cyber security.
The students all are graduating seniors at Upper St. Clair High School.
