Back-to-School event
Parents facing the unprecedented challenge of raising children during a pandemic will find much-needed support Aug. 15 during The Salvation Army’s Back-to-School Bash Drive-Through event, providing backpacks, gently used clothes, shoes and more at a safe social distance.
Sponsored by First National Bank, the event takes place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Salvation Army Pittsburgh Temple Worship and Service Center, 1060 McNeilly Road, Mt. Lebanon.
Advanced registration is required by calling 412-207-2127. A limited number of student haircuts are available at the site, and those attendees who receive them are encouraged to wear a mask and practice social distancing whenever possible.
Mt. Lebanon Public Library
The Mt. Lebanon Public Library Board of Trustees will meet at 7 p.m. Aug. 18 as an addition to their annual meeting schedule.
The agenda with location and public comment options will be posted the week before the meeting at www.mtlebanon.org.
The library has announced the cancellation of its popular summer Beer Garden Bash fundraiser. In its place will be a Virtual Beer Tasting Event hosted by Scott Smith, a Mt. Lebanon resident and owner East End Brewing.
Starting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29, he will share elements from his “Neighborhood Beer” series and other stories about his experience as a brewer, give a quick tour of the brewery and discuss how he creates the brewery’s beers. Wall Street Journal reporter Bob Hagerty, who co-chairs the library’s bi-annual beer events, will chat and taste along with Smith. Interspersed throughout the talk will be a fair amount of beer tasting and plenty of time for you to ask questions or make comments.
East End is creating a special Mt Lebanon Public Library Beer Tasting Case that is available for $75. Individual cans will be available for $6 each.
You must register for the Zoom event in advance at mtlebanonlibrary.org. A Zoom invitation will be sent to your email address the day of the event. Although registration is free, donations would be greatly appreciated for the Friends of the Library.

Financial assistance
Duquesne Light Co. encourages customers who are facing financial hardships to seek assistance while expanded aid resources are still available, including the LIHEAP Recovery Crisis Program, which is set to expire on Aug. 31.
The program is an extension of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program to help struggling Pennsylvanians with energy costs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the crisis program, income-eligible customers can apply for a one-time grant of up to $800 to use toward their electric bill.
Customers who received support from LIHEAP prior to the pandemic may be eligible for an additional grant through the crisis program. Those who are interested can visit https://www.dhs.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspx to learn more.
