Income tax assistance

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be available from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays through April 9 at The Bible Chapel, 300 Gallery Drive, Peters Township. The program is first-come, first-served, with no appointments.

Necessary items are last year’s tax return; identification for yourself and spouse; Social Security numbers and birth dates for yourself, spouse and dependents; all W-2 and 1099 tax documents, including Social Security 1099; 1095 health care statements and property tax receipts. Both spouses must sign joint returns.

Women’s club meeting

A meeting of the South Hills Women’s Club will be held on at 8 p.m. Feb. 10 at Vanadium Woods Village, 50 Vanadium Road, Scott Township.

Kelly Stebler, a practitioner of Reiki, will explain and demonstrate the benefits of Reiki for physical, mental and emotional health.

Ruthfred Acres Woman’s Club

The next meeting of the Ruthfred Acres Woman’s Club will be held at noon Feb. 11 at Panera Bread in the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon. Following lunch, a program will be presented by David Pfister speaking on the use of CBD.

South Hills Coin Club

The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. Feb. 11 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park.

This month’s program will be on silver coins. A 50/50 drawing will be offered and children’s prizes awarded. Applications are now being accepted for membership.

Jazz program

Mt. Lebanon Public Library will host “The Legacy of Jazz in Western Pennsylvania” at 7 p.m. Feb. 12.

A speaker from the Heinz History Center will present audio-visual biographical sketches of important contributors to jazz with western Pennsylvania roots, including Billy Eckstine, Johnny Costa, Mary Lou Williams, Henry Mancini, Ray Brown, Errol Garner, Billy Strayhorn and Maxine Sullivan. The program is presented by the Historical Society of Mt. Lebanon.

Holocaust program

An evening with Holocaust survivor Sammi Steigman is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 12 at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon. Hewill share his story about life in a Nazi labor camp, being subjected to the horrific medical experiments, how he survived and the many lessons he’s learned throughout his life.

Heart Health Week open house

An all-day open house for Heart Health week is on Feb. 13 at Spencer Family YMCA, 305 Church Road, Bethel Park. The Y will host the American Heart Association from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and will be holding blood pressure screenings all day. Call 412-347-6565 for information.

Dinner for a Dollar

Community of Christ, 3472 South Park Road, Bethel Park, will host Dinner for a Dollar from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 13.

On the menu are spaghetti, bread and rolls, fresh garden salad and desserts. Donations of $1 per person or $3 per family are accepted but not required. No reservations are needed. No takeout will be available, including desserts.

Lifeguard certification

Spencer Family YMCA, 305 Church Road, Bethel Park, is hosting a lifeguard certification course from Feb. 15 through March 7.

Entry-level participants learn the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personal take over. Minimum age is 15, there are no other prerequisites.

Used books and jewelry sale

Church of the Atonement, 618 Washington Ave., Carnegie, will hold a used books and jewelry sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 14, and 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 2 p.m. Feb. 15. A snow date is planned for 1 to 3 p.m. Feb. 16.

Civic Orchestra concert

The Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra presents “The Romantic Spirit” with special guest Alejandro Pinzon performing the works of Argentinian composer Astor Piazolla arranged for bandoneon and orchestra.

Piazolla is known for taking the tango rhythms in new directions by incorporating classical and jazz elements in his music. The orchestra will also play Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony No. 8. Liadov’s “Eight Russian Folk Songs” completes the concert.

Open house

Hillcrest Christian Academy in Bethel Park will hold its annual evening open house at 6:30 on Feb. 17.

Scheduled tours will be conducted throughout the evening, and three pre-kindergarten and kindergarten presentations are scheduled, for 6:45, 7:15 and 7:45. Teachers, instructional support personnel, the athletic Director and other staff will be available in gymnasium.

Woman’s club guest speaker

The Woman’s Club of Upper St. Clair will present guest speaker Gisele Fetterman for a program and lunch starting at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 18, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park.

Gisele, wife of Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, will speak about the Braddock Free Store, which receives surplus and donated goods and redistributes them to neighbors in need. What began as a Braddock project grew to serve residents all of Allegheny County.

Mt. Lebanon lunch, movie

The next Mt. Lebanon Recreation Senior Luncheon and Movie Matinee is scheduled for Feb. 18 on the second floor of the recreation center.

The event is for senior adults and their adult guests. Mt. Lebanon residency not required.

At 11 a.m. is a “Supermarket Sweep” with Mark Selekman. Imagine going down the aisles of your grocery store, picking out the healthiest items in every category. A hot lunch buffet and 50/50 raffle is at noon, and the movie is from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

The fee is $7, due the Friday before the luncheon. Please preregister. Walk-ins are not encouraged and will only be accepted if space permits. A late fee is charged.

A presentation on “Seven Steps to a Healthier Heart” will be featured at the seniors lunch scheduled for noon Feb. 19 at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Bethel Park Women’s Club

The monthly meeting for the Bethel Women’s Club will be held Feb. 19 at the South Hills Elks Lodge, 2789 South Park Road, Bethel Park. A social gathering at 11:30 a.m. is followed by lunch at noon. Applications for the Bethel Women’s Club scholarship will be available in the Bethel Park High School counseling office beginning March 1. The applications are due by April 15. South Park Women’s Club

Sarris Candies Inc.’s history will be featured at the South Park Women’s Club meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 17, at the South Park Township Community Center, 2675 Brownsville Road.

Norm Candelore Jr., retail operations manager, and Kim Geyer, assistant retail operations manager, will represent Sarris. Women from South Park and surrounding communities are welcome to attend.

Bethel Park flea market

Bethel Park Historical Society will host an indoor flea market from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Schoolhouse Arts and History Center, 2600 South Park Road.

Vendor tables are available for $25. All items must be contained on an 8-foot table provided by the historical society. No furniture or bulky items may be brought into the schoolhouse.

The historical society is also accepting donations for the sale. Items may be dropped off at the center between 6 and 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Proceeds from the sale will be used to fund ongoing restoration efforts at the center.

Pancake dinner on Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday pancake dinner will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb 25 at Center Presbyterian Church, 255 Center Church Road, Peters Township.

Good, old-fashioned plain pancakes will be complemented by varieties including chocolate chip, blueberry and gluten-free. Also on the menu are sausages and fruit.

Bethel Art Guild meeting

Bethel Art Guild will meet at 12:30 p.m. March 5 at the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave.

The speaker is David Wadsworth, who discovered his passion for painting in 2007, and he has been painting almost every day since. His paintings feature cityscapes and landscapes, many from the surrounding communities of Pittsburgh. He uses bold contrasts and simplification with his impressionistic style of oil painting.

His art is also influenced and inspired by his full-time job. He works at a local ministry for those seeking recovery from homelessness and addiction.

The guild’s juried Spring Show is scheduled for March 6-15 at the Galleria of Mt. Lebanon.

Chabad hosts Purim lunch

Purim seniors lunch is scheduled for noon March 3 at at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Benefit Cash and Prize Bash

A Cash and Prize Bash sponsored by the Bethel Park Lions Club is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. March 7 at the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave. The price is $55 per person, and only 200 tickets will be sold.

The ticket includes hors d’oeuvres, dinner, dessert and drinks, plus the opportunity to win cash prizes. There are also raffle baskets, a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and games.

All proceeds go to Lions charities and Bethel Park community organizations. Please bring your unwanted eyeglasses to be donated to the needy.

Purim In the Air

Chabad of South Hills presents Purim In the Air at 5 p.m. March 10 at the South Hills Jewish Community Center, 345 Kane Blvd., Scott Township.

Featured will be a SkyBar, “in-flight” entertainment and a meal served airplane-style. Costumes are welcome.

The event celebrates the holiday of Purim, which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, an Achaemenid Persian Empire official who was planning to kill them, as recounted in the Book of Esther.

Register for arts festival

Registration is open for the 2020 Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival, scheduled for March 20-22 at the DoubleTree by Hilton, Green Tree.

The festival offers classes, demonstrations, exhibitions, a marketplace, creative open studio and maker space. Those who attend can try new techniques, see demos and shop.

New this year are a dedicated fiber studio and exhibition by Brooklyn Tweed of Portland, Ore., with fibers from more than 75 sheep breeds; a World Exhibition featuring fabrics from 50-plus countries; the 25 Million Stitch Project, a global awareness-raising campaign representing 25 million displaced refugees; and the Pittsburgh Handmade Heart Making initiative, through which more than 5,500 hearts have been distributed since the 2018 tragedy at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Squirrel Hill.

Children’s choir ‘Bridges of Song’

South Hills Children’s Choir hosts the annual “Bridges of Song” from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 21 at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 905 E. McMurray Road, Peters Township, with teaching artist Joy Hirokawa, director of the Bel Canto Youth Choir.

Joined by the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus, Pittsburgh Girls Choir, and Giovani Voci, South Hills Children’s Choir shares a day of choral singing and camaraderie open to all local youth. A healthy lunch will be provided by Heisler’s Market, Trader Joes, Eat’n Park, Starbucks – McMurray, Chick-fil-A and local bakeries.

The day concludes with a free performance conducted by Hirokawa. Choristers will learn American sign language in “Can You Hear Me?” by Bob Chilcott, recount WWII memories in “Homeland” by Randall Stroope, and enjoy a new work by Hirokawa.

South Hills Children’s Choir is a nonprofit choir dedicated to offering quality musical education for children from all walks of life in the surrounding community and celebrating diversity both in music and in Southwestern Pennsylvania’s youth.

End of an era

The final Friends of South Park oldies dance is scheduled for 7 to 11 p.m. March 28 at the Home Economics Building in South Park, behind the Allegheny County Police station.

The cost is $30 per person and includes a fully catered dinner by Cyd West. Deejays will be Candy and Mike from WEDO-AM.

Photo Salon in Mt. Lebanon

A Photo Salon open house is scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. March 29 on the upper floor of the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center.

The best images submitted this year by the members of the Photo Section, Academy of Science and Art of Pittsburgh, will be on display. Judges will award prizes to the top photographs in 12 categories.

Kids in the Kitchen

Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon, will host Kids in the Kitchen for children ages 4 to 11 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on April 23 and 30, and May 7 and 14. Cost is $40.

Children will learn to cook Jewish holiday favorites, plus they will have one-on-one instruction on Hebrew Alef-Bet and reading.
