• Five Upper St. Clair High School musicians were selected through competitive audition to participate in the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region 1 Band Festival: Phoebe Chen, flute; Henry Zou, oboe; Justin Pacella, euphonium; Steven Halpner, percussion; and Nick Pacella, percussion.

The students qualified by their performances at the PMEA District 1 West Band Festival at West Mifflin High School. The Region event is March 26-28 at Moon Area High School.

Also performing at District 1 West Band Festival were Eliza Glunt, clarinet, and Matt Hornak, trumpet. Upper St. Clair High School students are led by Don Pickell, music teacher and band director.

PMEA District 1 includes school districts from Allegheny, Fayette, Green, Washington and Westmorland counties. PMEA Region 1 is comprised of PMEA District 1 and District 5, which includes Beaver, Butler, Lawrence and Mercer counties.

• Five Upper St. Clair High School students were selected through competitive audition to participate in the 2020 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region 1 Chorus Festival: Isabela Couoh, Alto 1; Hannah James, Alto 1; Ben Lang, Bass 2; Maddie Nolen, Alto 2; and Joe Henry Phillips, Bass 1.

The PMEA Region 1 Chorus Festival was held at Hickory High School. Upper St. Clair students are led by Lorraine Milovac, music teacher and choral director.

• A Fort Couch Middle School seventh-grader has been recognized for his community service efforts. Krishna Sathya Vagheeswar was awarded the Weekend Rescue Warrior Award from 412 Food Rescue, which honors the volunteer who completed the highest number of weekend rescues in 2019.

Krishna was presented with the award during the organization’s Hero Celebration on Jan. 16.

“The engagement with 412FoodRescue started as a result of the curricular requirement for community service,” Sathya V. Venkatasubramanian, Krishna’s father, said. “But Krishna has now developed a stronger motivation to be part of the movement.”
