Addiction presentation

The Substance Addiction Ministry of St. Louise de Marillac and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will present speaker Tracy Plevel, director of development for Gateway Rehab, at 7 p.m. Jan. 7. She will talk about the recently formed Hope Fund, which was created through a partnership with the Addiction Recovery Ministry and Gateway Rehabilitation to aid those transitioning from Gateway’s inpatient program to an aftercare plan.

The presentation will take place in the lower level of LeGras Hall, next to St. Louise de Marillac Catholic Church, 320 McMurray Road, Upper St. Clair. All are welcome.

USC concerts

The Upper St. Clair Performing Arts Department presents a series of concerts and performances by students of all ages. All start at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public:

Jan. 8 – Elementary Combined Choral Concert, high school theater;

Jan. 15 – Combined Strings Concert, high school theater.

Square Dancing

Peanut Squares Square Dance Club is sponsoring square dance lessons for $4 per night. The group meets Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. beginning Jan. 9 at Southminster Presbyterian Church at 799 Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon. No experience, costumes or partner required. Seeking Female Veterans

Are you a woman who has served in the any branch of the U.S. military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard? The local chapter of the Women’s Army Corp Veterans’ Association — Army Women United in Pittsburgh is looking for new members for the Keystone Chapter 120.

The next meeting is at 11 a.m. Jan. 11 at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Pittsburgh for both chapter business and a social gathering. The group welcomes all female veterans, regardless of branch, retired or active duty. Women’s Club meeting

The next meeting of the South Hills Women’s Club will be held at 8 p.m. Jan. 13 at Vanadium Woods 50 Vanadium Road, Bridgeville. A representative from The Frick Pittsburgh will speak about our local museum and share information about the 1893 World Exposition in Chicago and detail how it ties to Pittsburgh. South Hills Coin Club

The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 8 p.m. Jan. 14 at Bethel Presbyterian Church, 2999 Bethel Church Road, Bethel Park. Members and the general public are invited.

Bethel Woman’s Club to Meet

The Bethel Woman’s Club has its first meeting for the 2020 year scheduled for Jan. 15 at the South Hills Elks Lodge, 2789 South Park Road in Bethel Park. Checks for the luncheon must be received no later than Jan. 10. The featured speaker will be Theresa Zamagias from Damsel in Distress, presenting information on how to manage your personal safety. Chinese Buffet Dinner

South Hills Community Baptist Church is hosting a Chinese buffet dinner Jan. 25 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. The menu features: egg rolls, chicken fried rice, cheese dumplings, egg drop soup, potato wedges, steamed rice and dessert. Additionally, a bake sale will also be held. A donation of $10 per person is suggested. All proceeds go to the South Hills Community Baptist Church. The Church is located on the corner of Old Washington Road and Route 19 in Upper St. Clair.

Get Organized for Good

If you plan to make 2020 your year to conquer clutter, register to attend Get Organized for Good, scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Jan. 25 at Peters Township Public Library.

Jill Yesko, certified professional organizer and president of Discovering Organizing, will provide step-by-step decluttering and organization instruction. She will share Pittsburgh resources for recycling, selling and donating your household items, as well as sure-fire methods to simplify your home.

Illusionist show

Chabad of the South Hills Jewish Center in Mt. Lebanon presents “A Magical Evening With World-Renowned Master Illusionist Ilan Smith” on Jan. 26 at the Carnegie Stage, 25 W. Main St., Carnegie. The show starts at 7:45.

Dinner for a Dollar

Community of Christ, 3472 South Park Road in Bethel Park will hold a “dinner for a dollar” spaghetti dinner Thursday, Jan. 9 from 5-7 p.m. The church will be serving spaghetti, bread and rolls, fresh garden salad, and desserts. The church accepts donations of $1 per person or $3 per family, although it is not required. No reservations needed. No take out will be available, including desserts.

Retired Men’s Luncheon Group

The Retired Men’s Luncheon Group invites retirees to its lunch at noon Jan. 16 at Pleasant Hills Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road in Pleasant Hills. Following lunch, Thomas Jefferson High School students Mara and Casey Lako will play violin and guitar arrangements of songs from the Beatles to modern contemporary music. Auditions for Sleeping Beauty

The Carnegie Performing Arts Center is holding auditions for the charming ballet Sleeping Beauty based on the famous fairytale first penned by Charles Perrault and later by the Brothers Grimm. Performances will be at the newly-renovated Andrew Carnegie Music Hall in March. Director Monica Ryan choreographs the production and rehearsals will take place on Saturday afternoons. Ages 5-12 are invited to audition at 1 p.m., ages 13 and up are invited to audition at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the studios of the Carnegie Performing Arts Center, 150 E. Main St. in Carnegie. Senior luncheon, movie matinee

Mt. Lebanon Recreation will host a senior luncheon and movie matinee Jan. 21 on the second floor of the recreation center. The program is for senior adults and their guests. Mt. Lebanon residency is not required. At 11 a.m. is a celebration of National Tea Month. Hot lunch buffet and 50/50 raffle is a noon, and a movie on the big screen from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Scam Jam

Temple Emanuel in Mt. Lebanon will host “Scam Jam,” a fraud information event for seniors, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Jan. 21.

The free event will feature take-home resources and guest speakers from the Pennsylvania Department of Banking and Securities, state Office of Attorney General and Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office, along with games of “fraud bingo” with prizes.

TOPS meetings

Lungs at Work is launching a new option for black lung testing, and all area coal miners are invited to participate. The session runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 28 at the UMWA at 20 N. Main St. in Ellsworth. Miners from around the area can attend for health assessments, pulmonary screenings, pulse oximetry testing and benefits counseling and assistance with federal Black Lung applications. Appointments are required so call Lungs at Work at 724-941-1650 to schedule an appointment. Attendees should bring their health insurance card.

St. Elizabeth Preschool, located at 1 Grove Place in Baldwin, is holding a preschool preview “Planting the Seeds of Learning” where preschool parents and children can experience the school’s hands-on approach to learning.
