Mt. Lebanon Public Library is hosting virtual programs including:

• Passion & Paint, 7 p.m. Mondays, April 19 through May 15 (five parts). Love and the act of art making created several dynamic relationships during the 19th and 20th centuries. This class will focus on Degas and Cassatt, Morisot and Manet, Stieglitz and O’Keeffe, and Kahlo and Rivera. Register for the first session to attend them all.

• Greatest Generation Live: World War II Roundtable, 7 p.m. Tuesdays, April 20 and 27. The Veterans Breakfast Club – in collaboration with Mt. Lebanon Public Library, the Historical Society of Mount Lebanon and the Denis Theater Foundation – presents the series, which features a film discussion with Elaine Wertheim on April 20 and a discussion hosted by Glenn Flickinger on April 27. • Gardening With Native Plants, 7 p.m. April 21. Landscape architect Trish Beckjord discusses Pennsylvania native plants that do well in gardens and how to incorporate them into our landscaping.

• Home downsizing workshop, noon April 23. Learn how you can sell your excess personal property for the greatest amount of chase, with the least amount of work in the shortest period of time.

• Virtual Author Visit with Cameron Barnett, 7 p.m. April 22. Barnettt, a Pittsburgh-area poet and teacher, and editor of the Pittsburgh Poetry Journal. Cameron’s poetry explores the complexity of race and the body for a Black man in today’s America. His work has been nominated for a 2016 Pushcart Prize, the 82nd Annual Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards and the Rebekah Johnson Bobbitt Prize.

Book sale, puzzle exchange

Peters Township Public Library will host an Outdoor Used Book Sale and Puzzle Exchange from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 24 in the parking lot of the library, 616 E. McMurray Road

Book and puzzle donations will be accepted in the lobby from 1 to 4 p.m. April 19-23, only during those times. Please donate only gently used items. The library will not accept musty/moldy items, encyclopedias, or textbooks.

Donated puzzles should include all pieces and be in boxes that are taped or wrapped with a rubber band. If you donate up to five puzzles, you will receive an exchange slip for priority puzzle pickup from 9 to 10 a.m. the day of the event.

Shredding event

Mt. Lebanon will host a shredding event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 at the public works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive, off Cedar Boulevard. Shredding fee is $8 per box, cash or check only.

Blood drive

Healthy individuals are encouraged to donate blood from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. April 19 at Center Presbyterian Church, 255 Center Church Road, Peters Township. All participating donors will be entered into a random drawing for a pair of lower-bowl tickets to the April 24 Pittsburgh Penguins game against the New Jersey Devils.

Flea market

Church of the Atonement, 618 Washington Ave., Carnegie, is hosting a flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23 and 24.

The market will be closed on Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. prior to reopening for a bag sale. Featured will be kitchen items, linens, clothing including baby and toddler, lamps, wall hangings and more.

caregiver program

Artis Senior Living of South Hills in Bethel Park is hosting a program for families caring for someone with dementia.

Mary Underwood, vice president of memory care services for Artis, will discuss the Ethics of Lying. People with dementia sometimes ask questions that caregivers struggle to answer: How much of truth should I tell? If I am not truthful, am I lying to my loved one?

During the program, Underwood will present what is happening in the brain of someone with dementia, and how to answer their difficult questions in a way that feels ethical.

College club meets

The College Club of Carnegie will meet May 1 at Valley Brook Country Club, Peters Township. A social meeting at 11:30 a.m. is followed by lunch at noon.

Liquor license hearing

Upper St. Clair Township commissioners will hold a public hearing on May 3 for an application for transfer of liquor license: First Watch Restaurants Inc.

The hearing is part of the commissioners’ regular monthly meeting, which is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. in the Upper St. Clair Community and Recreation Center, 1551 Mayview Road.

Garden club plant sale

The annual Treehaven Garden Club plant sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon May 8 at South Park Shops in Bethel Park.

The sale will be held on the sidewalk in front of Rite Aid and Pet Supplies Plus. The club will be selling hanging baskets, herbs, specialty gift baskets and homegrown perennials from members’ gardens.

Masks and social distancing will be required.

Golf outing

WOMEN of Southwestern PA Inc. is holding its second annual golf outing fundraiser on May 3 at Valley Brook Country Club. The event begins at 11:30 a.m. with check-in and range practice. Shotgun start and boxed lunch follows at 1 p.m., and cocktails, dinner and prizes at 6 p.m. for women’s, men’s and mixed teams.

The individual golf package is $250 and includes green and cart fees for 18 holes, a welcome gift, boxed lunch, dinner after the round and a door prize raffle ticket.

Author presents program

Peters Township Public Library will host Bethel Park native Walter Meyer via Zoom at 7 p.m. May 10 as he shares anecdotes and photos from his latest book, “If You Weren’t Here, This Would Not Be Happening.”

Written one story at a time on Facebook during the Covid Pandemic, the book is a collection of dozens of humorous, tragic, and touching anecdotes from the author’s weird life. From his family’s relationship to the Pittsburgh Pirates, connections to the Battle of Gettysburg, stories of growing up in the South Hills, celebrity encounters (including fellow Pittsburgher Shirley Jones) to other odd jobs including working in Hollywood, all stories celebrate the underlying theme that life is an adventure if you choose to live it as one.

Plant sale

Giant Oaks Garden Club will sponsor its 20th annual plant sale and garden market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 15, rain or shine, at the Peters Township Public Library.

The plant sale will feature a large variety of quality potted perennial plants selected from members’ gardens. Also featured are herbs, annuals, hanging baskets and raffle baskets of gardening items.

Club members, many of whom are master gardeners, will provide assistance and answer individual gardening questions from the public.

This year, the sale features a twist to the annual flea Market. Members will be cleaning out their sheds and garages to sell all things related to gardening for a garden market. You can expect gardening hand tools, shovels, rakes, hoses, planters and more.

In 2019, more than $2500 in net proceeds was raised from the plant sale and flea market toward the Club’s $15,000 in donations. The 2020 sale was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Beneficiaries include Peters Township Public Library, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, Washington City Mission, Peters Township Meals on Wheels, Pittsburgh Botanic Gardens and the Washington County Children’s Garden, plus four scholarships.
