What’s Happening Week of May 9
Author program
Peters Township Public Library will host Bethel Park native Walter Meyer via Zoom at 7 p.m. May 10 as he shares anecdotes and photos from his latest book, “If You Weren’t Here, This Would Not Be Happening.”
Written one story at a time on Facebook during the COVID-19 Pandemic, the book is a collection of dozens of humorous, tragic, and touching anecdotes from the author’s weird life. From his family’s relationship to the Pittsburgh Pirates, connections to the Battle of Gettysburg, stories of growing up in the South Hills, celebrity encounters (including fellow Pittsburgher Shirley Jones) to other odd jobs including working in Hollywood, all stories celebrate the underlying theme that life is an adventure if you choose to live it as one.
A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation. Learn more at www.waltergmeyer.com.
Registration is required at http://tiny.cc/WalterMeyer. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
South Hills Coin Club
The monthly meeting of the South Hills Coin Club will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 11, at the Bethel Park Municipal Building, 5100 W. Library Ave. All members and the general public are invited.
The program will be on irradiated dimes, which were created as a way to demonstrate atomic energy principles and as a souvenir.
A 50/50 will be offered and children’s prizes awarded. Applications are now being accepted for membership. For more information, call 724-984-6611.
Giant Oaks plant sale
The Giant Oaks Garden Club will sponsor its 20th annual plant sale and garden market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 15, rain or shine, at the Peters Township Public Library.
The plant sale will feature a large variety of quality potted perennial plants selected from members’ gardens. Also featured are herbs, annuals, hanging baskets and raffle baskets of gardening items.
Club members, many of whom are master gardeners, will provide assistance and answer individual gardening questions from the public.
This year, the sale features a twist to the annual flea market. Members will be cleaning out their sheds and garages to sell all things related to gardening for a garden market. You can expect gardening hand tools, shovels, rakes, hoses, planters and more.
‘Smokey Joe’s Café’
Upper St. Clair High School’s Performing Arts Department will present “Smokey Joe’s Café: The Songs of Leiber and Stoller” at 7:30 p.m. May 13-16.

Peters Creek Historical Society
Relevant cultural history in our backyard is the focus of the next meeting of the Peters Creek Historical Society.
Speaker Len Marraccini, vice president of the society, will present “The Adena Culture: Mound Builders in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” a program about the numerous burial mounds that were built in this area, as well as the ongoing controversy regarding the stature of the Adena people.
On display will be artifacts from the Peters Creek Mound, located on the current site of U.S. Clairton Coke Works, and items courtesy of Walt Seal from the Crall Mound in Monongahela, which at one time housed the second-largest American Indian Burial mound in the eastern part of the United States.
The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 24 at Wright’s United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Peters Township.
Tours of the Enoch Wright House, built in 1815-16 and now owned by the historical society, are set for the 2021 season. Docents will be on hand from 6 to 8 p.m. the first Wednesday of every month, and from 1 to 3 p.m. May 16.
