Food drives on Montour Trail

Food drives benefiting the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank and Greater Washington County Food Bank are scheduled on the Montour Trail.

Donations of nonperishable food items, paper products, household and hygiene items will be taken. Monetary donations are not accepted, nor are glass containers.

Collections are from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at:

• Hendersonville Trailhead, Cecil Township, by Tandem Connection (Mile 27.1), May 22. Rain date is May 23.

• Piney Fork Road at Wastewater Treatment Plant, South Park Township (Mile 37.8), June 5. Rain date is June 6.

• George Washington Elementary School, 515 Clifton Road, Bethel Park Branch, June 19. Rain date is June 20.

Electronics recycling

The Pennsylvania Resources Council is launching a pilot program in May to collect electronics for recycling on designated weekdays at two Michael Brothers Hauling & Recycling locations, including 901 Horning Road in Baldwin Borough, just outside of Bethel Park.

The South Hills collection times are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18, 2 to 6 p.m. May 20, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 25 and 2 to 6 p.m. May 27.

At no cost, individuals can drop off cellular and home phones; computer towers and peripheral equipment; and video game consoles and DVD players. For a fee, people can drop off televisions, computer monitors and printers.

Peters Creek Historical Society

Relevant cultural history in our backyard is the focus of the next meeting of the Peters Creek Historical Society.

Speaker Len Marraccini, vice president of the society, will present “The Adena Culture: Mound Builders in Southwestern Pennsylvania,” a program about the numerous burial mounds that were built in this area, as well as the ongoing controversy regarding the stature of the Adena people.

On display will be artifacts from the Peters Creek Mound, located on the current site of U.S. Clairton Coke Works, and items courtesy of Walt Seal from the Crall Mound in Monongahela, which at one time housed the second-largest American Indian Burial mound in the eastern part of the United States.

The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 24 at Wright’s United Methodist Church, 788 Venetia Road, Peters Township.
