FLAG DISPLAY

The Friends of South Park continues its memorial flag garden around the four patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veterans Day.

Flags will be displayed one week before and after each holiday at the Joyce Kilmer Circle and near the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park.

A donation of $10 per flag covers the entire year. Deadline to purchase a flag is May 6.

DONATION DROP

Donations for Ukrainian refugees can be placed in a drop-off box located in the main lobby of the Peters Township Library. The depository has been placed by the House of Prayer, a Slavic church located in Pittsburgh.

There is a tremendous need for non-perishable food and hygiene products, but all donations are welcome.

SENIOR LUNCHES

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation offers luncheons from noon to 2 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month for senior citizens. Events include entertainment, speakers and interactive activities.

Events are free but guests should bring a covered dish or dessert to share. Pre-registration is required. RSVP by the Monday before each event by calling 724-942-5000.

Lunch and picnics dates this spring are: April 13 at the community recreation center for a bunny craft and social; May 11 and June 8 at Shelter 4 in Peterswood Park. Grilled hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided for the picnics. Musician John Sarkis entertains on May 11.

SENSORY FUN

In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, the Senator John Heinz History Center and Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum will host Sensory Friendly Days April 18-22.

Individuals of all ages with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or sensory processing differences can experience “the Smithsonian’s home in Pittsburgh” in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

Admission is free for individuals with ASD or sensory processing differences, plus one caregiver.

SENIOR GAMES

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation offers games for seniors from 2 to 4 p.m.

On April 21, seniors play bingo in the side parking lot of the recreation center. May 26 will be for 500 rummy card games. Yahtzee will be played June 23.

PT SHRED DAY

A free document shred event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon April 23 at McMurray Elementary School in Peters Township.

Each vehicle may dispose of a maximum of three boxes/bags of paper-based materials.

BP SHRED DAY

Bethel Park will conduct a Shred-It-Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23 at Guardian Storage on Milford Dive.

Limit five file boxes per person.

Participants should wear a mask to the event.

CLEAN-UP DAY

Peters Township Clean-Up Day will be held April 23.

Volunteers helping to keep the community free of litter meet at 9 a.m. at the recreation center located on Meredith Drive in Peterswood Park.

SINGERS WANTED

The Pittsburgh Youth Chorus is accepting new singers in grades 2-12.

The first audition date available is April 25. Tryout dates will also be held May 2, 22 and 25, June 12, July 10 and 29 and Aug. 5.

PLANT SALE

The Treehaven Garden Club’s annual plant sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 7, at the South Park Shops, 5209 Library Road, Bethel Park.

Home-grown perennials, herbs, and houseplants will be available for purchase as well as hanging baskets from Lenik Greenhouse.

CONCERT SET

South Fayette resident and baritone singer Anthony Brown will be featured during a free concert set for 1 to 3 p.m. May 7 at Gladden United Presbyterian Church, 755 Millers Run Road, South Fayette.

Brown will perform “Songs and Stories of Peace, Hope and Justice.” He will use songs and stories from his international travels and illustrate how music is a powerful tool for bringing people together.

Seating is first come, first served. Donations to the church are appreciated but not required.

CHORALE EVENT

The South Hills Chorale’s spring concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. May 13 and at 2 p.m. May 14 at the Christ United Methodist Church located at 44 Highland Rd. in Bethel Park.

Titled ‘Let The Songs Begin’ the show will include a variety of songs such as The Battle Hymn of the Republic, Climb Every Mountain, You’ll Never Walk Alone and Les Miserables among others.

Tickets are $20. They are available on line at southhillschorale.org or by emailing: patmoraytis@comcast.net.

Proof of vaccination is required.

BENEFIT RUN

The Walk, Run, Roll 5K race will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 14, at Washington Wild Things Park.

Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Sponsored by Voices for Independence and TRPIL, the event benefits the new program and community center at 42 W. Maiden St., Washington.

PLANT SALE

The Giant Oaks Garden Club’s 21st annual plant sale and garden market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Peters Township Public Library

The sale features a large variety of quality potted perennial plants and also features herbs, vegetables, annuals, hanging baskets and raffle baskets of gardening items.

GOLF OUTING

The Mainstay Life Services 15th annual Charlie Ross Memorial Charity Golf Outing will be held June 27 at The Club at Nevillewood.

Proceeds from the event benefit the people who receive supports from Mainstay Life Services. Mainstay is a nonprofit organization that provides lifelong, high-quality support services to ensure that people with developmental disabilities lead fulfilling lives and realize their vision of a desirable future.

Events include a putting contest, a shotgun start of scramble format or play at your own ball, lunch and dinner as well as a silent auction.

Entry fees are $450 per golfer or $1,800 for a foursome.
