CORNHOLE

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a cornhole tournament from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Peterswood Park amphitheater.

Ages 18 and over are eligible. A team consists of two players.

Fee is $10 ($15 for non-members).

FLEA MARKET

The 10th annual Horror Fan Flea Market will be held 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Library Volunteer Fire Company located at 6581 Library Road in South Park.

Admission is free except for the early bird hour from 10 to 11 a.m. $5 will be collected at the door at that time.

Parking is free close to the Blue Line Library PRT station.

More than 50 vendors will be selling movies, books, posters, figures, arts, crafts and other hand-made items. There will be a cash snack bar.

ORIENTATION

A freshman and new student orientation will be held at 6 p.m. Aug. 17 at Bethel Park High School. Principals will give attendees an overview of what to expect during the transition to their new school. Tours of the facility will be available as well as a Q&A session for parents.

ARTS FESTIVAL

The Pittsburgh Creative Arts Festival will be held Aug. 25-27 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Green Tree.

Knitting, crochet and quilt items will be featured.

Toni Lipsey of TL Yarn Crafts will conduct a signing of her book: The Tunisian Crochet Handbook from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the Maker Space.

Stacy Wiener will lecture and help attendees create soap sacks that will be donated to charity.

BAND FESTIVAL

The 27th annual Festival of Bands will be presented by the Mt. Lebanon High School marching band at 6 p.m. Sept. 10 at the stadium.

Allderdice, Bethel Park, Blackhawk and Seton LaSalle high school bands will perform along with the Mt. Lebanon Blue and Gold Bands, Little Devils and percussion front ensemble and drumline. Additionally, the Robert Morris University band will be featured.

Tickets are $8 in advance from band members or $10 at the gate. Children under 5 are admitted for free.

CONCERT

Academy Quartet “Variations on Variations” will be presented from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sept. 16 at Sunnyhill, 1240 Washington Rd. in Mt. Lebanon.

Members of the quartet are Jorie Butler-Geyer and Leah Givelber violins, Warren Davidson, viola, and Robin Hasenpflug, cello.

The group’s repertoire combines well-loved classics of the with rarely heard gems and attractive new works.

Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door

SHOE DRIVE

The Beth El Congregation of the South Hills is conducting a shoe drive through Oct. 6. Gently worn, used and new shoes will be collected and given to developing nations for impoverished people to start their own businesses.

Shoes can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the synagogue located at 1900 Cochran Rd.

JAZZ

RML JAZZ will perform at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at The Studio at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall on Beechwood Avenue in Carnegie.

Tickets range from $15 to $20.

The group features Laura Chu Wiens on vocals, Jeff Leonhardt on guitar, Gene Laus on trumpet/flugelhorn, Rick Purcell on keys, and Rick Laus on drums, and performs classic and pop styles of Jazz from artists such as Miles Davis, Chuck Mangione, Wes Montgomery, Diana Krall, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Grover Washington and Herb Alpert.

WALKING TOUR

The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation will conduct a walking tour of the city’s bridges and river shores from 10 to 11:15 a.m. Aug. 23.

Meeting point is outside the Renaissance Pittsburgh Hotel on Sixth Street.

The tour takes a loop bounded by the north and south shorts of the Allegheny River and by two of the three sisters bridges that cross it.

Tickets are $20 per person.

Dress for weather and arrive 10 minutes before the tour starts.

ROTARY BBQ

The 33rd annual Upper St. Clair-Bethel Park Rotary Club chicken bbq will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Bethel Park High School.

Tickets are $15 and includes half of a chicken, baked beans, chips, roll, dessert and a raffle ticket with the chance to win prizes.

The Chartiers Valley “Class Of 1972” Reunion will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Heidelberg Fire Hall located at 456 1st St. in Carnegie.

AARP PICNIC

AARP Chapter 3016 will host its summer picnic on Aug. 16 at Scott Park.

Additionally, the group meets the second Tuesday of each month, year round, at the Unity Presbyterian Church located at 1146 Greentree Road. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Ages 55 and older can attend.

TOPS MEETING

TOPS Chapter 475 meets year-round at the Carnegie United Methodist Church located at 415 Washington Ave.

Formally known as Take Off Pounds Sensible, dues are $5 per month.

Weigh-ins are at 3:30 p.m. Classes run from 4 to 5 p.m.

FISHING DERBY

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department and McMurray Rotary team up to bring the annual fishing derby to Peters Lake Park. The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon Aug. 20. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade can participate. Pre-registration is required. Fee is $5 ($10 non-residents).

Prizes will be awarded.
