The saying “when in Rome” conjures up images of indulging in pasta, freshly shaved cheese, and biscotti.

WQED’s Chris Fennimore has taken that phrase to heart in his culinary pursuits. No stranger to the Eternal City, Fennimore calls Rome home several months a year while visiting his daughter and two grandsons. His daily pleasure for nearly a decade is perusing the Mercato for fresh produce, cheeses, seafood and meats for dinner. As one might imagine, Fennimore has amassed a collection of recipes. He and co-host Nancy Polinsky shared a few with viewers during the premiere of “When in Rome” on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 10 a.m. on WQED-TV.

“When in Rome” will have encore broadcasts on WQED-TV on Saturday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m., and Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m. and noon.

During this two-hour pledge event, Fennimore and Polinsky along with some local culinary friends of “QED Cooks,” will cook several authentic recipes from Rome, Italy, such as caprese salad, green olive salad, cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper), potato gnocchi, artichokes ala Romano, beef strachetti, roman meatballs and biscotti di regina.

During the show, a new cookbook of 100 recipes from Fennimore’s Italian recipe collection will be offered to viewers so that they too, can do as the Romans do.
