Pittsburgh Perspectives

The Denis Theatre’s “Pittsburgh Perspectives” series is presenting a virtual community dialogue on the topic “Building a Life in a New Country: Welcoming Afghan Families to Pittsburgh.”

The free webinar, on Zoom and Facebook, is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 26.

Featured panelists are Linda Barnicoat, refugee support committee member at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Mt. Lebanon; Sloane Davidson, founder and chief executive officer of Hello Neighbor; Jordan Golin, president and chief executive officer for Jewish Family and Community Services; and Larry Lebowitz, founder and chairman of the Immigration Group at the law firm Dentons Cohen & Grigsby.

The moderator is Jon Delano, president of the Denis Theatre Foundation.

Meditation course

A new course from the Jewish Learning Institute, “Meditation From Sinai,” will be held on six Wednesdays, Jan. 29 through Feb. 23, at Chabad of the South Hills, 1701 McFarland Road, Mt. Lebanon or on Zoom.

Book and jewelry sale

The Church of the Atonement, 618 Washington Ave., Carnegie, is holding a used book and jewelry sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Jan. 28 and Jan. 29. The sale will be closed on Saturday from noon to 1 before reopening for a bag sale.

Beside books, there will be CDs, DVDs, records, book binders, magazines and other items. Some jewelry is new (never worn) and could be used as gifts. No 14-karat jewelry is included.

Coat drive

Pittsburgh South Hills Elks Lodge 2213, 2789 South Park Road, Bethel Park, is conducting a winter coat drive, accepting donations of new or used coats, scarves, boots, gloves and hats for people in need.

TOPS meeting

Take Off Pounds Sensible (TOPS) weight loss group Chapter No. 475, Carnegie, meets every Tuesday at Carnegie United Methodist Church, 415 Washington Ave. — Carnegie. The cost to attend the meetings is $5 per month. Classes begin at 3:30 p.m. with a weigh in and run from 4 to 5 p.m. For more information, call Francis at 412-818-7489.

AARP meeting

AARP Chapter No. 3016 meets the second Thursday of each month at Unity Presbyterian Church, 1146 Greentree Road. Doors open for the meeting at 11:30 a.m. Light refreshments are served at each meeting. Anyone older than 55 is welcome to attend. The chapter has 259 members and has travel, programs and charity work.

Tai Chi meet and greet

Tai Chi for Health Pittsburgh will sponsor a free meet and greet and demonstration of tai chi qigong at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 at Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church, 900 Country Club Dr., Mt. Lebanon.
