USC HALLS

Nominations for the Upper St. Clair High School Halls of Fame are being accepted through May 31.

Founded in 2000, the Halls honor those who have distinguished themselves in academics, the arts, or athletics at the high school, collegiate or professional level and who, in so doing, have contributed to the pride and prestige of USC.

Nominees may be alumni who graduated five or more years ago, former staff members and/or former volunteers.

Nominations may be completed online.

Those selected for induction will be honored during Oct. 7 and will be recognized before the home football game between Upper St. Clair and Bethel Park High School.

WALK PROGRAM

The Bethel Park Public Library offers a Wise Walk program at 9:30 a.m. Thursdays beginning May 12.

The 10-week program, geared for adults, begins at the parking lot by the gazebo/pond on Maple Spring Drive in South Park.

STORY TIME

The Story Time At The Stage program runs Tuesdays through May at 10 a.m. at the South Park Theater, located on the corner of Brownsville Road and Corrigan Drive.

No registration is necessary.

BE POSITIVE

The Bethel Park Public Library offers “What If” at 2 p.m. May 21.

The program is for grades K-4 and designed for those struggling with anxiety so as to turn their negatives into positives.

SHIM FUN DAY

The South Hills Interfaith Movement (SHIM) will host its annual fundraiser event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 14 at the Bethel Park Center, 5301 Park Ave.

Tickets are $30 per adult and $15 for children.

Dubbed “Celebrate the South Hills with SHIM, the event features music provided by the Pittsburgh Symphony, educational community arts and crafts, cultural dances, activities such as face painting and tours as well as snacks, food and drinks for purchase.

AUTHOR SPEAKS

Susan Mellon will speak on her journey as a writer at 6:30 p.m. May 12 at the Bethel Park Public Library.

In addition to her topic, “Uniquely Me,” Mellon will discuss some of the romance novellas she has written.

FEEDING BIRDS

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department will hold a Pre-K Bird Feeder program from 2 to 3 p.m. May 12 at the community center.

Ages 3 to 5 can attend and must be accompanied by an adult.

Fee is $5 ($8 non-members).

MOVIE CHATS

The Denis Theatre Movie Chats are back.

The John Ford-directed westerns “Stagecoach,” “The Searchers” and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. May 10, 17 and 24 in a free, one-hour Zoom meeting with Carnegie Mellon University professor David Shumway.

WOMAN’S CLUB

The Bethel Woman’s Club will meet May 18 at the South Hills Elks Lodge, located at 2789 South Park Rd. A social gathering starts at 11:30. Lunch will be served at noon.

During the event, the group will award its $3,000 scholarship to a Bethel Park senior to help further his/her education.

The organization is open to all women residing in the South Hills area.

FREE FUN

Let LOVE GROW is an event to spread awareness about foster care. It will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. May 19 at the The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center, located at 5324 Penn Ave.

Open to all, the outdoor, carnival-like event features door prizes, games, crafts, live music, free food truck and activities provided by the Children’s Museum and Carnegie Science Center.

ICE SKATING

The Ice Sports Industry (ISI) Northeast Championships will be held May 13-15 at Alpha Ice Complex in Pittsburgh.

Hosted by Ice & Blades, the national competition will feature competitors of all skill levels representing rink teams from across the country. The event will feature more than 25 different skating event categories for individuals, partners, groups and teams.

The Giant Oaks Garden Club plant sale and garden market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at Peters Township Public Library

The sale features a large variety of quality potted perennial plants and also features herbs, vegetables, annuals, hanging baskets and raffle baskets of gardening items.

HDSA EVENT

The Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s (HDSA) Western Pennsylvania Chapter will host “FastTrack For a Cure” at 8 a.m. May 22 at the North Park pool parking lot.

For the past 15 years, the event has raised more than $170,000 for a cure for the fatal genetic disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain.

TRYPO CONCERT

A Brand New Way will be the theme for the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestra’s spring concert set for 5 p.m. May 28 at Heinz Hall.

The program features Sibelius’s “Suite for Violin” with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra member Irene Cheng and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with vocalists Dr. Zuly Inirio and Anita Levels from UniSound’s Black Teaching Artist-in-Residence program. Becky Mack, Young Peoples Orchestra 2021-22 Concerto Competition Winner, will play an excerpt from Strauss’s “Oboe Concerto.” Composer and former TRYPO member Hannah Ishizaki will conduct the premiere of “Miniatures,” a string ensemble piece commissioned by TRYPO.

The concert will end with all of TRYPO’s ensembles performing Ottorino Respighi’s “Pines of the Appian Way” on one stage.

Doors open at 4 p.m. The ensemble will perform in the lobby as guests arrive.

Attendees should register for tickets in advance. General admission is free with suggested donation. Reserved seating is available with a VIP ticket purchase and includes parking, a beverage voucher, and swag.

The South Hills Women’s Club hosts a “Picnic in the Park” from 5 to 8 p.m. June 8 at the Scott Township park lodge.

The fundraiser for Mainstay Life Services will feature raffle and wine baskets, 50/50 and $2 Mystery grab bag.

GOLF OUTING

The Charlie Ross Memorial Charity Golf Outing will be held June 27 at The Club at Nevillewood.

Proceeds from the event benefit the people who receive supports from Mainstay Life Services. The nonprofit organization provides life-long, high-quality support services to ensure that people with developmental disabilities lead fulfilling lives and realize their vision of a desirable future.

Events include a putting contest, a shotgun start of scramble format or play at your own ball, lunch and dinner as well as a silent auction.

Entry fees are $450 per golfer or $1,800 for a foursome.
