BELL RINGERS

BOOK SALE

The Peters Township public library, located on East McMurray Road, is holding its holiday book sale from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily until Dec. 23. The main lobby will feature used books, media and holiday favorites for purchase. For more information, call 724-941-9430.

LIGHT CONTEST

Peters Township is conducting a holiday lights decorations contest. The event is open to all homes in the township. Registration is required. Visit www.peterstownship.org or call 724-942-5000. Deadline is Dec. 16. Judging will take place at 6 p.m. Dec. 16.

TOY TRAINS

The Trolley Museum’s Trolleys and Toy Trains event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 16. Visitors of this event will be able to ride on decorated trolleys and to view the Lionel toy train layout. Admission is $13 for adults, $12 for seniors and $11 for children ages 3-15; children under 3 are free.

COIN CLUB

The South Hills Coin Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Bethel Park municipal building, located at 5100 West Library Ave. In addition to the group’s Christmas party, there will be a 50/50 raffle and children’s prizes awarded. VETS NEEDED

The Women’s Army Corp Veterans’ Association’s Pittsburgh Keystone Chapter 120 will meet at 11 a.m. Dec. 10 at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall in Oakland. After a brief meeting, the group will wrap holiday gifts for veteran families. The group is open to members of all military branches including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. PT LIBRARY

The afternoon book club for adults meets from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 21. The group will discuss “Daisy Jones” as well as “The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

The eventing book club for adults meets from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. Dec. 14. This is the group’s planning meeting.

Drop-in chess play for adults will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Dec. 28 in the reading room.

Afternoon bingo for seniors and caregivers will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Dec. 6 and Jan. 3.

A behind-the-scenes tour of the history archives will be led by librarian Margaret Deitzer on Dec. 8. The session is limited to 12 adults.

WRAP & YAP

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department will hold a wrapping and yapping party from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the community center. HOLIDAY KICKOFF

A winter break kickoff celebration will be held from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Peters Township library, located on East McMurray Road. Patrons can get a photo with Pittsburgh Penguins mascot Iceberg between 1 and 2 p.m. There will be holiday movies to view in the Teen Room. Crafts can be made in the multi-purpose room. There will be free books to keep or check out books and movies for the holiday break. Each person who checks out five or more items will receive a ticket to win a prize basket. CHANUKAH EVENT

The South Hills Lights Glow in the Dark community wide Chanukah event will be held at 5 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Dormont pool parking lot. In addition to the lighting of a giant Menorah, there will be music, face painting, glow-in-the-dark tent donuts, gelt drop and a Chanukah raffle for $18. Registration is encouraged. The South Hills Women’s Club will hold a holiday party at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at Gianna Via’s located in Caste Village. The club will resume its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

HOLIDAY MUSIC

WINTER CONCERT

The South Hills Chorale presents its winter concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 16 and at 2 p.m. Dec. 17 at Christ United Methodist Church, located at 44 Highland Road in Bethel Park. The 80-member group of male and female voices will perform a variety of seasonal songs. Admission is $20. Tickets are available from chorale members, at the door or online at southhillschorale.org.

BP CONCERT

The Dean Streator Holiday Concert will be held at 2:30 p.m Dec. 11 at the Bethel Park Community Center. The concert will feature performances by the Community Band South under the direction of Jim Bennett and Max Gonano; Bethel Park High School’s Top 21 chamber choir, conducted by Todd Kuczawa; and the Handbell Ringers of Southminster Presbyterian Church, Richard Pinkerton, Director. Admission is free but donations are welcome and help further the work of the Bethel Park Community Foundation, the event’s major sponsor.

WBN MEETING

The South Hills Chapter of the Women’s Business Network (WBN) meets at 8 a.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month while the group’s Mt. Lebanon Chapter meets at 8:30 a.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. All meetings are held at Panera Bread located in The Galleria on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.

Mt. Lebanon’s Uptown Winter Market and Holiday Celebration will kick off the holidays on Washington Road on Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be music, artists, makers, vendors, entertainment and all the traditional holiday elements such as the Southminster Handbell Choir and an elf hunt.

BATH BOMBS

Ages 13 to 17 can learn how to make holiday bath bombs for gifts or keepsakes from 6 to 7:15 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Peters Township Community Recreation Center. Fee is $10 ($15 non-members).

The Peters Township Parks and Recreation Department is offering a one-day bus trip to Oglebay on Dec. 8. The bus departs at 12:30 p.m. and returns to the community center at 10 p.m. Tourists will visit the Wheeling Glass Museum, take a self-guided tour of the Mansion Museum, shop at the stores at The Hilltop, dine at the Wilson Lodge, then take a guided tour of the Festival of Lights.
