Creepy features, seasonal favorites hit big screen at Rangos
From Halloween to Christmas, a number of creepy features and beloved holiday classics will hit the big screen over the coming months at Rangos Giant Cinema in Pittsburgh.
Halloween-themed special showings, all on Saturdays, include “Night of the Living Dead” on Oct. 28 at 5:30 and 8 p.m.; and “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” on Nov. 4 at 5:30 and 8 p.m. While the latter movie is technically after Halloween, guests are encouraged to come in costume for both films.
The version of “Night of the Living Dead” shown will be the original, which debuted in 1968 in Pittsburgh. The George A. Romero classic was filmed in and around Pittsburgh, and follows seven people barricaded in a rural farmhouse in Western Pennsylvania as it is under assault by an ever-growing group of zombies.
According to the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), the film’s budget was about $114,000 (equivalent to about $941,800 in 2022). Its gross: $30 million (equivalent to $247.8 million in 2022), making it one of the most profitable independent movies ever made.
“The Muppet Christmas Carol” will help ready viewers for the Christmas season with showings at 5:30 and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, and, just in time for Thanksgiving, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” shows on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 and 8 p.m.
Two days after Thanksgiving, on Saturday, Nov. 25, it’s time to begin the seasonal debate: Is “Die Hard” a Christmas movie?
Those who haven’t seen the 1988 Bruce Willis flick can decide for themselves during an 8 p.m. screening.
Open Thursday through Sunday, the cinema also offers a number of educational films, including “Blue Whales: Return of the Giants” through June 30; “America’s Musical Journey,” from Nov. 2-19; and “Dream Big: Engineering Our World,” from Nov. 2-19.
