LEBO REC

Registration is being accepted at mt.lebanon.org for Mt. Lebanon recreation programs. Offered are:

Karate on Mondays and Wednesdays for ages 7 to adult, beginners through all belts, beginning Aug. 24

Sporties for Shorties for ages 3 to 6 beginning Aug. 31 with morning and afternoon sessions available. The program helps children develop strength, fine and gross motor skills, coordination, balance and social skills while playing sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball and hockey.

Dance classes for ages 1 through 12 beginning Sept. 3. Classes are held Thursday and Friday. My Mini & Me is for ages 1 to 3. Creative Movement is for ages 3 to 4. Dance is for ages 4 to 12.

Art Factory begins Sept. 14 with Clay & Canvas from 4 to 5 p.m. Let’s Paint is held from 5:15 to 6:15. Cartooning and Creative Drawing is held from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. Private art lessons are offered for children through adults from 4 to 5 or 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays.

The recreation department also offers an array of exercise and fitness classes as well as a variety of ice skating and ice hockey programs.

GARLIC

A garlic festival will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at Flora Park, 430 Corrigan Dr. in South Park. The event supports SHIM’s Neighbors Helping Neighbors program.

The event is free but participants are encouraged to bring extra garden produce, shelf stable foods, and personal hygiene items to donate to the cause. Cash donations will also be accepted. Anyone who donates receives a free Dramm hose nozzle.

There will be fresh garlic seed for sale, demonstrations, and food-tasting samples as well as face painting, music, the Auntie Anne’s Pretzel truck, raffles, and the Bethel Park Fire Department will bring a ladder truck for display.

“Organic Gardener” Doug Oster will be the featured guest.

PEP RALLY

Chartiers Valley High School will host a fall sports pep rally from 5 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21 at the stadium and school campus. In addition to Hoop Pittsburgh, there will be an array of food trucks from Kona Ice, Southside Barbeque, The Roaming Bean, D Soda Company and Hotdawgs as well as a dunk tank and music.

CHABAD

The Chabad of the South Hills will celebrate two high Jewish holidays at its location in Mt. Lebanon at 1701 McFarland Road.

On Rosh Hashana there will be an evening service at 7 p.m. Sept. 11. There will be a morning service (Torah and kids program) at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 12 and an evening service at 8 p.m. Sunday services on Sept. 13 are at 9:30 a.m. 11 a.m. (Torah, Shofar Service and kids program) and 5:30 p.m with additional Shofar.

Yom Kippur will be celebrated Sept. 20 and 21. Kol Nidrei and evening service is at 7 p.m. Sunday. Monday service is at 10 a.m. Torah and Yizkor Memorial Service is at 11:45 a.m. Mincha and Neila closing service is at 6 p.m. Services followed by buffet break-fast.

PT REC

Registration for the Peters Township parks and recreation department’s Session 5 programs and one-day classes, which will be offered in September and October, is open online at peterstownship.com/.

PICKLEBALL

A pickleball and tennis fun day will be held Aug. 22 at the Peters Township tennis center located at 610 East McMurray Road.

From 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. there will be free, adult pickleball round robin play and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. a free, adult beginner tennis clinic will be offered.

Courts will be free to play on all day.

PURSE BASH

The Rotary Club of Bethel-St. Clair will host a Purse Bash from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Library Volunteer Fire Department located at 6581 Library Rd. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $40 each. LADIES NIGHT

The Peters Township Newcomers and Neighbors will host a ladies night out Sept. 10 at Valleybrook Country Club. Reservations are required and due by Aug. 27.

PT LIBRARY

Peters Township’s annual Read Local Eat Local event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 29 at the library located at 616 East McMurray Road.

Twenty-two local authors will attend, representing a variety of genres ranging from romance to

mystery, fantasy to memoir. Authors will have books on hand for all ages – picture books, young adult novels and adult fiction and non-fiction. In addition, three food trucks will be on site with lunch options available for purchase: Franken-Fried, Mediterranean Tastes LLC, and Frios Gourmet Pops.

Made possible with the support of the Peters Township Library Foundation, the event will take place rain or shine and is free and open to the public. No registration is required.

“We are so excited to have local book lovers join us at the library for our seventh year of Read Local Eat Local,” says PT Library Director Lacey Love. “It’s a great opportunity to get up close and personal with authors, help support their work, and take home a signed book. Plus, it’s a family-friendly event with children’s entertainment, raffle prizes, local food trucks and more.”

WATER PARK

The Rolling Hills Aqua Park will operate Aug. 27-30 and Sept. 3-7 under normal hours 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. In September, the facility will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting.

BOOK SALE

A used book sale will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 17 in the lobby of the Peters Township Library located at 616 East McMurray Rd. Fill-a-bag cost is $15.

The sale continues 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 18 for $10 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 for $5.

The library supplies the bags.

In addition to books, an assortment of CDs, DVDs and puzzles will also be for sale.

BLOOD DRIVE

The Pittsburgh South Hills Elks Lodge 2213 will conduct a blood drive from 3 to 7 p.m. Sept. 4.

The Bethel Park Police Department and community resource officer Amber Carruba will be on hand to assist and share details about the Yellow Dot Safety Program.

HELP WANTED

Volunteers are needed to help with the Peters Township Haunted Trail. High school students and adults are needed to narrate the story and lead groups through the trail. Scene actors, ages 13 and over, are needed for the tableaus and displays.

Meetings will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 8, 23 and 30 (for a final walkthrough) at the recreation center. A meeting at a time to be determined will also be held on Sept. 16.

The haunted trail event runs from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 2 and 5:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 3.

FALL SOCCER

CONCERTS

Peters Township concerts are again being held at the Peterswood Park amphitheater this summer. Concerts start at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted on Wednesdays and food trucks will be on site.

Remaining shows are Street Level (6 p.m.) on Aug. 19; and Desperado: Eagles Tribute Band (6 p.m.) on Aug. 26.

Special events include: Wild World of Animals (6:30 p.m.) on Sept. 2, and Hocus Pocus on Oct. 9.

Beer and wine are permitted and available for purchase at concerts only.

CAMPING

A father-son campout will be held Sept. 19 and 20 in Bird Park, located off Cedar Boulevard in Mt. Lebanon. Rain date is Sept. 26-27.

Boys in kindergarten through fifth grade accompanied by a male family companion can participate.

Fee is $50 per male adult and child ($55 nonresidents). Additional children are $10 each.

CRAFTS

The South Park Women’s Club’s 32nd annual craft show will be held Oct. 10 at the Broughton Fire Hall and the group is seeking “unique” crafters and vendors for the event, which features a variety of homemade items as well as offers refreshments, a bake sale, auction and raffle baskets.

Applications are being accepted for John McMillan Presbyterian Church’s annual Christmas Affair.

Space is limited for the event scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 7 at 875 Clifton Road, Bethel Park.

Each year, more than 50 artisans showcase a wide variety of handmade goods and holiday gifts at the event, which also includes a festive Gingerbread House, chance auction and the Kris Kringle Kafé. Admission is free.

The Joy of Christmas craft show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at St. Louise de Marillac School and LeGras Parish Center at 320 McMurray Road.

More than 100 artists and crafters will offer items for purchase. In addition to craft and 50/50 raffles, lunch, snacks and baked goods will be available for purchase.

Admission is $2 and includes a ticket for the craft raffle.

Strollers are not permitted inside the show.

HEALTHY EATING

The South Hills chapter of Plant-Based Pittsburgh meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every third Monday at the Sunnyhill Unitarian Universalist Church on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon.

Plant-Based Pittsburgh is a non-profit organization that promotes healthy nutrition and living through a whole foods plant-based lifestyle.

The group will host a potluck on July 15 and host a special guest speaker on July 20.

The Association of University People (AUP) welcomes singles 50 and older who are four-year college graduates, to join them for various activities and to meet new friends.
