Peters celebration the perfect example of patriotism
Veterans of Foreign Wars. American Legion. United Service Organization. U.S. Military Vets Motorcycle Club. Veterans for America. Wounded Warrior Project. The list goes on and on.
Each of these is an example of a support and/or service organization that was formed to aid members of the United States military in some capacity. There was no better example of veteran support than what happened in Peters Township this past weekend.
The VFW Post 764, along with hundreds of members of the community, welcomed home injured Afghanistan veteran USMC Sgt. Doug Vitale, and his wife, Alexis, with an emotional celebration.
Vitale lost both legs in an improvised bomb attack two years ago, and has since suffered two strokes as a result of his injuries and is unable to speak. Despite his inability to talk, his personality remains, and he has been undergoing rehabilitation in Florida while plans for a new, functioning home is built for the couple.
The homecoming celebration is part of a week-long series of events for Vitale, culminating with a performance by Gary Sinese’s Lt. Dan Band at Stage AE on Pittsburgh’s North Shore on Aug. 9. Proceeds from the events will benefit the fund to construct the Vitale’s smart house, which will allow him to lead as normal life as possible, in Peters Township.
Area residents have also stepped up to the plate, making monetary contributions of up to $500 for the home.
The words unique and brave do not even begin to do justice to describe the type of person who enters the military. These heroic men and women sign up to fight for our country, fully aware of the potential consequences.
Too often these days, we hear of those making the difficult transition back to civilian life after serving, be it due to post traumatic stress disorder, the inability to find a job in tough economic times, physical injuries and more.
Just as we are beyond proud of Vitalie for his service and sacrifice, we are beyond proud of Peters Township, local veterans, area businesses and community members at large for their contributions to helping him make the transition home – and for honoring him and recognizing his sacrifices.
Everyone involved is the epitome of patriotism, and we are thrilled to call this region home and have the Vitales as neighbors.
