School – Aug. 7
All soon-to-be fourth grade students at McMurray Elementary are invited to a fourth grade social on Aug. 15. Meet other classmates and make new friends.
The event will be held from 5-6:15 p.m. Arrive on time as activities start promptly at 5. A walk-thru will begin at 6:30.

Harley Robinson, daughter of Glenn Robinson and Laura Whitcomb of Upper St. Clair, was selected to participate in the C-MITES Summer Program for academically talented students. Robinson attended the Programming Using Alice class held at Upper St. Clair High School from July 8-19. She will be a sixth-grader at Boyce Middle School in the fall.
(PIX) Madeline O’Neill, a recent graduate of Canon-McMillan High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Canonsburg Business & Professional Women’s Club.
While attending C-M, Madeline was a cheerleader and also volunteered in the guidance office.
She is the daughter of Michael and Janell O’Neill and will be entering Duquesne University in the fall, majoring in pharmacy.
Independence Middle School, Bethel Park, will hold a Registration Day at 9 a.m. Aug. 21 for students who will be transferring to IMS in the fall from private, parochial and non-Bethel Park schools.
Parents should contact Cindy Stalder in the IMS office at 412-854-8677 to obtain a registration packet that must be completed in advance of Registration Day.
Students who were sixth-graders at Neil Armstrong Middle School during the 2012-2013 school year do not need to do anything, as they are already registered for IMS in the fall.
Domestic Violence Services of Southwestern PA has school programs available for preschool through college students. Programs are presented in an age-appropriate fashion and can be tailored to meet specific needs. For information, call 724-223-5477 in Washington County.
Dylan Opferman, a student at Keystone Oaks High School, has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in language arts. The Academy recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students.
Dylan was nominated for this honor by Ms. Nancy Kraemer, a teacher at the high school, and will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s Official Yearbook, which is published nationally.
Dylan is the son of Samantha and John Opferman of Pittsburgh. His grandparents are Mary Alice and John Opferman of Pittsburgh, and Barbara Kuzma and Harry and Judy Goolo, also all of Pittsburgh.
