HAPPENINGS
Phipps Conservatory anticipates the blooming of one of the world’s rarest, largest and smelliest flowers, the legendary corpse flower. It was first cultivated in 1889. Named “Romero” after horror director George Romero, whose Night of the Living Dead was filmed around Pittsburgh, the corpse flower is on display in the Palm Court until it blooms late in August.
The flower will last 24-48 hours, then it will collapse, reappearing six to 10 years later.
Friendly Squares will host a free fun night of square dancing at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 at St. Benedict the Abbot Church, McMurray. Families, singles and couples are welcome.

Phipps Conservatory will host its ninth annual Red, Ripe and Roasted tomato and garlic festival 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 25. This family-friendly event features cooking demos, tomato contest (prizes for ugliest, smallest or largest tomato), farmers’ market and activities for kids.
Guests are asked to bring a bag of fresh produce to help community members through the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. Last year’s event collected more than 3,100 pounds of food.
3rd Street Gallery, Carnegie, will present Roger Barbour & Friends at 3 p.m. Aug. 18. The afternoon of music will feature Roger Barbour on trumpet and flugel horn, Mark Strickland on piano, Miles Jackson on upright bass, Vince Taglieri on drums and Barbara Ray on vocals. Cost is $15 at the door.

Washington Area Humane Society in Eighty Four will host its second Dog Swim at Mineral Beach, Finleyville, 5-8 p.m. Sept. 2. Dogs will receive a doggie bag of goodies. Activities are planned for dogs and humans of all ages.

Fix ‘Ur Cat will sponsor its second miniature golf charity tournament starting at 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at Red Carpet Golf and Recreation Center in Washington.
Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., golf begins at 6:15. Dessert, raffles, prizes.
Tickets are $15 per person or $55 per foursome.
Fix ‘Ur Cat is a volunteer group whose goal is to help Washington County residents access low-cost neuter/spay services for their cats. Proceeds from the golf outing will support these services in the Washington County area. Receive one raffle ticket for each pound of dry cat food or five cans of food donated to Fix ‘Ur Cat. Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation has planned the following program on Pittsburgh’s Penn Avenue. Travel Penn Avenue from Wilkinsburg to Pittsburgh’s Point at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Landmarks Preservation Resource Center in Wilkinsburg. Follow the path that British General John Forbes and his troops took as they marched westward to take control of the Point in November 1758.
