The Bower Hill Road reconstruction project was set to begin Aug. 12, where traffic will be reduced to one lane inbound from McLaughlin Run Road to Union Street.
Outbound traffic detour routes will be posted.

The Bethel Park Municipal Blood Drive will be held from noon-6 p.m. Aug. 29 in the Bethel Park Community Center, 5151 Park Ave.

The Paper Exchange will shred confidential papers from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Public Works yard, 1250 Lindendale Drive off Cedar Boulevard. The cost is $3 per box with the first box free. Payment may be made with cash or check.
The Allegheny Health Network is offering an eight-week workshop on Tai Chi at the Outpatient Care Center. The next class session begins Sept. 9. The fee is $85 for one class per week. Discounts are available to Allegheny Health Network employees.
Tai Chi is a combination of exercise and meditation that is good for people of all ages and fitness levels. It is ideal for coping with arthritis pain and swelling. The course is sponsored by Allegheny Health Network’s Integrated Medicine Program and Lupus Center of Excellence in cooperation with the Arthritis Foundation and is taught by certified instructor J. Gurney Bolster.

• There will be a community blood drive at the Peters Township Public Library from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Aug. 28. The drive will be held in the first-floor community room.
All presenting donors will receive two Pirates tickets in the mail.

All Oldies, Only Oldies record hop will be held from 8 p.m. – midnight Nov. 9 in the community center and social hall of the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department. The event usually sells out well before the dance. Buying tickets early is encouraged.
The dance features Doo-Wop, rhythm and blues, and rock and roll from the late 1950s and early 1960s. This year, legendary disc jockey Porky Chedwick, will hold a special Meet and Greet. Chedwick will address the crowd before dancing begins and will sign autographs and have photographs taken.
Tickets are $10 and the evening is “bring your own everything” like food and liquid refreshments. The fire department will furnish free refreshments with the exception of soft drinks.

The original Stockdale dances for teens began Dec. 21, 1957, and ran through August of 1964. Crowds usually numbered in the thousands. Live performers included The Skyliners, The Flamingos, Little Anthony, The McGuire Sisters, Lou Christie and The Jive Five. There is a pictorial display in the main hallway of the social center.
The Community and Recreation Center will be open indoors from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Labor Day, Sept. 2. The outdoor facility will be open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 2, which will be the last day for the outdoor pool.
Members of the Washington County Drug Task Force will hold a sobriety checkpoint between Aug. 21 and 24, at an undisclosed location in the jurisdiction of the task force.
• Washington County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer group hayrides this fall at Mingo Creek County Park.
Hayrides will be held from 5-8 p.m. Oct. 11,19 and 25, and from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 12, and 1-8 p.m. Oct. 19 and 26.
Hayrides last about 50 minutes, and the hay wagon can accommodate about 25 people per hour.
A picnic shelter and fire circle are provided for two hours before and after the scheduled hay ride.
The cost is $50 per hayride.
