Starbucks is another amenity at the new Giant Eagle Market District Express.

“Bite-size” and “smaller footprint” are terms used to describe the Market District Express that opened in Peters Township Dec. 5 at the intersection of Washington Road and Circle Drive.

The first of its kind in the Giant Eagle family of grocery stores, gas stations and car washes, the Market District Express is anything but small with 15,500 square feet of groceries, a sit-down restaurant, 350 different varieties of craft beers, a bakery, a full-service pharmacy, a Starbucks outlet and more.

Anna Card is the store leader, a term used for store manager, and has been on the job in Peters Township since July while the buildings were constructed. She said convenience is one of the goals in the new store at 2840 Washington Road.

“The restaurant is one of a kind for Giant Eagle,” Card said as she sat at a spacious table in the restaurant area shortly after the grand opening. For those ordering breakfast, lunch or dinner, a pager is provided to allow the shopper to pick up some groceries or other items, before the pager alerts them to when the chef-prepared food is ready. Other pagers are equipped with a global positioning system, so waiters may easily find the table where the diners are located.

Card said wine is sold by the glass or bottle and must be consumed while in the store.

Immediately inside the front door facing Washington Road is a Starbucks station, and south of that is the in-store bakery next to the deli section.

The store is set-up for convenience, quick in and quick out. The Market District Express is open daily from 6 a.m. until midnight. The nearby Get Go gasoline pumps, just south of the main store, are open 24 hours a day, every day, as is the kiosk. And, next to that is a Wet Go car wash.

Grocery prices inside the Market District Express are comparable to those in other Giant Eagle stores.

Dan Donovan, a spokesman for Giant Eagle, said items in the grocery store were selected from the top-selling brands in the nation, plus the top-selling Giant Eagle brands and a speciality brand. But, don’t expect to find any baby products, like diapers.

Peters Township was chosen for the new-concept store for the local demographics, the need and for the location, Donovan said.

“It’s a neighborhood format,” he said. “It will be attractive to the busy lifestyle on the go, and they want a restaurant-quality meal with delivery to the table.”

Before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Michael Silvestri, Peters Township manager, welcomed the new store to the township along with the 120 jobs.

“As a company, Giant Eagle is always looking for ways to continue to enhance and expand our multi-format strategy to anticipate and exceed ever-evolving customer needs,” said Laura Karet, Giant Eagle Chief executive officer. “Market Express is the next step in the development of our concepts, combining a modern dining experience in a contemporary rustic atmosphere, with a grocery selection that allows area customers to shop close for their everyday needs.”
