The public is invited to attend the Relay for Life Business Blitz from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 9, in the Shop ‘N Save Community Room, 3239 Washington Pike, second floor. There will be information stations for how organizations can join the fight against cancer, plus additional information.
• The first Council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 6. All other Council meetings will be held the second Monday of each month.
The municipal and tax offices will close at noon Dec. 31 and remain closed all day Jan. 1. Normal business hours will resume at 8 a.m. Jan. 2.
The McMurray Rotary Club is seeking requests from local organizations (Peters Township/Washington County area) for its 2013/2014 philanthropies. The Club annually assists local organizations in the McMurray/Washington County area. Most contributions are under $1,000, although some are higher. Interested groups should send their request to: McMurray Rotary Club, 2013 Philanthropies, P. O. Box 1291, McMurray, PA 15317. All requests must be received by Jan. 18.
Stave off winter’s chill with delicious chili and beer at the third annual Winterfest, noon-3 p.m. Feb. 22, in Clearview Common. The event is presented by the Mt. Lebanon Partnership.
Tickets are $15 for samples of chili from local restaurants, as well as the grudge cookoff between the Mt. Lebanon Fire and Police departments. This year they’ve invited Medical Rescue Team South to the challenge. Beer will be available from Pittsburgh’s best local brands.
The township’s Parks and Recreation Department will offer classes in January and February at the Community Recreation Center.
Register online or at the center for session 1, which is eight weeks of classes. Registration began Dec. 16. Classes will begin Jan. 2.
Strabane Trails, 317 Wellness Way, will hold two free events in January that are open to the public.
At 2:30 p.m. Jan. 9, there will be a presentation on Gettysburg: The Battle. At 2:30 p.m. Jan. 23, the International Button Box group will perform. Both events are free. To register for one or both events, call 724-225-4100.
The Upper St. Clair Youth Steering Committee and Together in Parenting (TIP) invites the community to “Straight Talk,” a discussion with judges and local law officials about current events facing the local and federal courts and the Upper St. Clair Police Department.
The event will be held from 7-8 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Community and Recreational Center at Boyce Mayview Park. Speaking will be U.S. District Court Judge Mark Hornak, District Judge Blaise Larotonda of Mt. Lebanon, and Upper St. Clair police Lt. James Englert.

• The township will hold a Christmas tree recycling project from Dec. 26 to Jan. 27, in the upper parking lot of the YMCA on McMurray Road.
