More development set in North Strabane

Development boomed in 2012 in North Strabane Township, and it’s looking like 2013 won’t be any different.

“A lot of people are looking to get into the township,” said Doug Trbovich, township building code officer who’s responsible for issuing permits for the construction of residential and commercial projects.

According to Trbovich, the township almost hit the $300,000 mark in permits issued last year. Projects included the building of a new Holiday Inn Express on Racetrack Road, office condominiums on Ashwood Drive, and a retail outlet at Racetrack Road and Route 19.

Traditionally, development proposals wane in the winter months but not this year, Trbovich said.

“It’s very unusual. It normally slows down a bit,” he said. “But, it’s been steady. There’s been no drop-off.”

A little more than a month has passed in 2013 and the township has already issued more than $60,000 in building permits. In the meantime, there are plans in the wings for three more hotels, a drug store and four residential developments.

According to township manager Frank Siffrinn, Bove Development Corp. of Bethel Park is looking to build the residential developments on Route 519 near the Wylandville Elementary School, Weavertown Road near Sheetz and Willow Street, off Route 19.

The supervisors will hold a public hearing Feb. 19 on the fourth plan consisting of 56 units on McDowell Lane. The developer is seeking a conditional-use permit for the proposed site.
