Public should be allowed to voice opinion

1 min read

In response to Bethel Park Councilman’s Don Harrison’s letter to the editor, “Bethel needs to use scalpel approach,” I say, “Why not let the voters decide?”

Add the Bethel Park Volunteer Fire Department (BPVFD) to the list that Bethel Park Councilman Harrison has taken aim. For more than 80 years, the BPVFD has been able to operate without any tax dollars and has survived on donations.

With costs escalating faster than donations and the need for a new building, the BPVFD would like to place a question on the May ballot asking the residents for a dedicated funding source for a new building.

This is a huge departure from routine business for Bethel Park Council, and I believe we should allow the public to have a voice on how their tax dollars are spent. In my opinion, it is all about political control.

It seems like a very legitimate request, but Councilman Don Harrison is opposing the effort to let the public decide.
