Even though Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, there are still a lot of winter days remaining. And if you’re looking for a creative way to pass the time before the weather gets warmer, a visit to Kid Ewe Knot could be in order.

Located in the Bridgeville Plaza, Kid Ewe Knot is a yarn and fabric art store offering a variety of classes for crafters of all levels, including “quick bit” classes. Half hour sessions, quick bits provide an introduction to a stitch or technique for those who may need a refresher or who want to try knitting before committing to a full class.

For example, the Knit in a Bit session teaches how to cast on and knit, while Purl in a Bit teaches how to purl.

Some of the other offerings at Kid Ewe Knot include classes in crochet, spinning on the drop spindle, house socks and a kids’ knit class. There are also “knit-a-longs” designed to work a group of knitters through a new project together. On display was a lightweight cotton shawl, perfect for cool spring evenings and a relatively easy project to make according to one of the owners, Heather Metzger of Upper St. Clair.

Metzger said those who know some of the basics of knitting might enjoy the three-week house socks class. Making socks intimidates people because there is so much technique involved, she explained. “If you can make a sock, you can make anything.”

Metzger and her business partner, Laurie Graham of Brentwood, met in a knitting group and had been planning to start a store of their own for a long time. When the owner of Carol’s Needleworks said she was going to retire, Metzger and Graham decided to take over her shop for their new business.

In addition to hosting classes, Kid Ewe Knot carries a rainbow of luxurious yarns and supplies for knitting and crocheting. They are also a Schacht Spindle dealer, carrying spinning wheels and small looms.

“We expanded the reach of the fabric arts,” said Metzger.
