CV’s Vulcano selected Athletic Director of the Year
Frank Vulcano Jr. from Chartiers Valley High School has been selected for the PIAA District VII Athletic Director of the Year Award. He will be honored March 14 during the Pennsylvania State Athletic Directors Association conference in Hershey.
As an athletic director, he has been active for as many as 13 years with the association and other certifications.
His service to his local Athletic Director Association and Leagues consist of various activities. He was a part of the WPIAL from July 2007-June 2011, serving as president for two years, and vice president for two years. He also served as a Board of Control Member from 2007-2009.
In addition, Vulcano is the Chairman of the WPIAL Wrestling Committee and has been the director for all sectional and district tournaments for the past nine years and has hosted 275 WPIAL play-off games and nearly 50 District VII championship events.
His service to the state includes serving on the PIAA Wrestling Steering Committee since 2004, vice president of the Washington County Chapter of PIAA Wrestling Officials for 20 years and official since 1982. Vulcano has officiated in five PIAA state individual tournaments, 18 Southwest Regional events and a PIAA state team tournament final.
Named Wrestling USA’s 2002-2003 Pennsylvania Man of the Year, Vulcano was inducted into the California University of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, as well as the Southwestern Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2005.
In 2010, he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Washington/Greene County Hall of Fame.
For 10 years, he has been a member of the Chartiers-Houston School District School Board. He had been a committee member for 17 years and a co-director of the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic for 14 years. For the past 27 years, he has served as director of the Powerade Wrestling Tournament, one of the top scholastic wrestling events in the country.
After Vulcano graduated from Chartiers-Houston High School, he continued his education at California University of Pennsylvania. He received his bachelor of science, business administration and management degree in 1985 and his master’s of arts degree, geography and regional planning in 1987.
Vulcano and his wife, Susan, have three children, Garrett (18), Jenna (16) and Julia (13) and reside in the Chartiers-Houston School District.
