Bethel Park updates security procedures

2 min read

The Bethel Park School District has had security procedures in place and recently revised some procedures to update security.

The revisions were prompted by the incidents in Newtown, Conn., in mid-December, in which 26 young students, staff and teachers were murdered by a gunman who entered the elementary school by breaking a window. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound as police arrived.

Currently, all visitors in the Bethel Park district must enter any of the schools through the designated entry door only. Visitors must ring a bell for entry and respond to the person on duty at the school. The visitor must report to the front office after entry to sign in. Photo identification, such as a driver’s license, must be presented before a pass is issued to permit entry.

If a student is to be picked up from school, a written notification stating the name of the individual responsible for picking up the student, and the time of the release is required.

A telephone number should also be included along with the parents’ or guardians’ signature.

Before the child will be dismissed, the person picking up the student, must report to the office, show identification and sign the child out of school.
