Deer uninvited guest in North Strabane home

A young doe made a crashing entrance when she paid an unwelcome visit at the home of an 81-year-old North Strabane Township woman Jan. 5.

Township police Sgt. Dave Richards said the doe jumped through a living room window, nearly missing a decorated Christmas tree.

The deer then ran through the first floor of the house and, at one point, may have put its hooves on the kitchen counter.

When the woman went to unlock the door for police, she realized the young animal was standing near her front door.

“We had her go to a back room and close that door,” Richards said. “We then opened the front door. After a few minutes, the deer poked its head around the door. I guess it figured it could get out now and just ran out the door. We last saw it running in the direction of Weavertown Road.”

Police said the woman was not injured, but she was checked at the scene by ambulance personnel.

Richards said the living room window was made of thick glass. The deer left a 3-by-3-foot hole.

“It looks like it was running full tilt when it hit the window,” the sergeant added. “It had to have popped the window hard.”

The deer, which Richards said looked to be about 1 year old, was cut when it went through the window. It left a trail of blood throughout the home.

Richards said police are not sure whether it is the same deer that broke a window at another townhouse in the 200 block of Queens Court.

“Residents said there are about three deer running through the area,” Richards said. “A deer jumped up, breaking a window at another home, but heavy blinds inside may have prevented it from getting into the house.

“This is a first for me.”
