BP’s Varley earns award
Erin Varley of Bethel Park was selected as one of three recipients of the 2013 Administrator of Tomorrow award as selected by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA).
The NACWAA Administrator of Tomorrow Award recognizes a student, intern or volunteer at an institution, conference office or association for their aspirations and preparations toward a career in intercollegiate athletics. In addition, it acknowledges the outstanding leadership and involvement of the honoree on campus and in the community.
The daughter of Kevin and Kathleeen Varley worked as an intern in the Shippensburg University athletics department last year after playing four seasons of varsity basketball for the women’s team.
According to Carrie Michaels, SU’s associate director of athletics, Varley is an individual who, “because of her proven ability, conscientious effort, and level of professionalism” has been tasked with a wide range of duties. “It is an understatement to say that she excels at her job responsibilities,” she added.
As a result of her award, Varley will attend the 2013 NACWAA National Convention in San Diego in October.
Academically, Varley pursued a dual major in chemistry and exercise science and a dual minor in biology and coaching. She graduated from Shippensburg University in May.
A Bethel Park High School product, Varley excelled in basketball and volleyball scholastically. She averaged seven points, six assists and five rebounds per game during her career. An Almanac Female Athlete of the Year finalist, Varley played on four district playoff teams, one WPIAL finalist squad and three state playoff teams.
Currently, she is working at Healthrax Fitness Center and in the athletic department at the University of Pittsburgh. In the fall, she will return to Shippensburg to continue pursuing her MBA while working as a graduate assistant in the University’s athletic department. She will also be a volunteer basketball coach at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa.
