Nicholas Salicce was the 2013 recipient of the Ken Waldie Memorial Scholarship. The recent Bethel Park High School graduate will apply the $6,000 grant to the University of Toronto, where he will be a freshman in the fall.

The son of Mark and Donna Salicce lettered in both soccer and track and field during his school days. He also captained both squads.

His other extracurricular activities included symphonic band and the National Honor Society. Salicce also was a member of the Homecoming Court and he was voted “friendliest” by his senior classmates.

Salicce serves as a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and in the local rotary club.

To date, the Friends of Waldie Organization has awarded $62,000 to distinguished seniors for their college pursuits. All possess the characteristics that made Mr. Waldie a success until his tragic death. On Sept. 11, 2001, he was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11 that struck the first World Trade Center Tower.

A BP graduate, who led the Hawks to the WPIAL title, attended the United States Naval Academy, where he was voted president of his class all four years. He graduated first in his class while earning a masters degree from Northeastern University.

Employed by Raytheon when he died, Waldie left behind his wife, Carol, three sons, Andrew, Jeffrey and Johnathan, a daughter, Meredith, and four siblings, Jack, Jane, Mary Louise and Grace, as well as many friends, who founded the memorial fund in his name.
